Here's a copy of the message I sent the seller, I wonder if I'll get an answer back. The margins on this stamp are way too big as well!!

"I'm not trying to be insulting but if this stamp is legitimate you have the only existing used copy of BC#1. You should take this stamp to have it authenticated and if it is real you can name your own price. Unitrade says " No. 1 was never placed in use." The price you quote, if this stamp checks out, would be much too low, it's worth the risk!!"

I wonder if this dealer is the one doing the dirty or if he bought this "stamp" from someone else!

Dave, it seems so stupid to fake a stamp in a condition that doesn't even exist. And they even had the nerve to add a numbered (New Westminster) postmark as well. And the least they could do is get the margins right. No one, hopefully, would pay that much money without doing some research. It never fails to amaze me how stupid people can be!! If they had done a bit of research first they would have ended up with a fake that might have possibly sold!

It looks like this could be a genuine unused BC#1 with faults that someone tried to improve with a "favor" cancel! Rolling On The Floor Laughing

See the image below of a pair of unused that sold a few years back for about $30K in a Sparks auction. Big margins are not out of the question. And it (the stamp in question) looks like it is on stamp paper rather than what a proof might be more likely printed on such as card stock or India paper.

re: A used copy of BC#1!!!!!! I doubt it!

That pair is one heck of a great image!! I paid $4000 for my single and it has undeniable provenance and it was a once in a lifetime offer. I stare at it often! I can't imagine anyone spending that amount of money without some kind of assurance it is real! I don't have a scan of this stamp alone and have posted the collection a couple times. I'll show the first page of the BC collection below in case anyone is interested. Again the pair is amazing and the size of the borders is surprising. My #1 has four intact borders and I'm happy with that. An unanswered question is "How many did they produce?". My only new addition to this page is a #2 with a red #1 (New Westminster) postmark.
Image Not Found
Edit: I was just looking at the image of the pair again and noticed the inscription that seems to say "Sheet of sixty". I wonder if that solves the mystery about how many were produced. It is a very rare item and I doubt if more than that were printed. Theory seems to be that they were a demo for the upcoming BC#2 and never intended for postal use.

I agree looks like the imperf sheet was 6x10.

But I found another block from the bottom of the sheet (below). Not as good an image though. The caption on this image indicates it is the bottom right pane which to me implies at least one more pane if not three more. And how many sheets were printed?

This is from a presentation titled THE POSTAGE STAMPS OF BRITISH COLUMBIA & VANCOUVER ISLAND by Tom Meyerhof 5 December 2019

It also had images of several examples with imprints of Specimen and an image of an imperf reprint of 1862.

The only references were to auctions: Eaton & Sons Auction, October 1988; Eastern Auctions February 2019, June 2017, November 2018

Sorry about the attempt at humo(u)r, really couldn't help it!! The 147 really is a mystery!! It could stand for almost anything, an ID for the engraver, a code for some part of the process, anything. Maybe it was someone's favo(u)rite number! It's also the perfect snooker score and Ronnie O'Sullivan has 15 of them in tournament play!

Thanks Jack for showing the strip of six. You're right, I think, about this being one pane of a sheet of either two or four. No one seems to know, at least no one I can find out about, seems to know how many sheets were produced. I doubt if there were very many or the price per copy wouldn't be as high as it is since there would be more out there. This is just an opinion, I have never claimed to be an expert, and would never claim to be. But one person on the site did ask a supposed expert on Canadian stamps and he/she didn't know how many were produced. Because of the "sixty" shown above at least we have a hint now!

@Nobody

Just me trying to figure out information on this so called BC#1. Is this the first postage stamp issued by BC? When was this postage stamp made assuming it is a postage stamp?

Seems to me common sense would indicate this issue would have have had a large printing.

I know next to nothing about BC stamps, but enjoy learning and talking about stamps.

Again, I'm not asking anyone anything!!!

The stamp is from 1860 and it is catalogued as BC #1. But is was never issued and some would say it is a proof or essay. I don't believe there are any certified used ones. Sometimes even if a stamp is never issued officially, it can sneak out and get used postally.

I think the 2 1/2 d Edw VII Tyrian Plum is such an animal. It was never officially issued but Geo V had got hold of some and put one on a letter and sent it to himself. Unique and in the Royal Collection.

re: A used copy of BC#1!!!!!! I doubt it!

Here's a little bit of information on the BC stamps for anyone who is interested.
https://www.stamp-collecting-world.com/b ...
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-c ...
Here's a list of the numbered postmarks that they know the communities for. So far I have #'s 1, 7, 8, 10 and 35. Most of these are on BC #2 which is fairly cheap. They do have stamps with other numbers but since they are not on cover they have no idea which communities they are from. Unitrade has a full listing and have given rarity values out of 10 for each. The postmarks also come in different colours, some more rare than others. I'd love to learn more but it's difficult since there was never that much information recorded and the individual # postmarks can be outrageously expensive. Again, in response to 1898, I am not claiming to be an expert, just someone trying to learn.
EDIT: These numbered post marks also show up on Canada stamps after BC joined Canada in July, 1871. Unitrade mentions which numbers and rarity factors as well.
1 – New Westminster (BC)
2 – Douglas (BC) Later Port Douglas
3 – Hope (BC)
4 – Yale (BC)
7 – Lytton (BC)
8 – Clinton (BC)
9 – Seymour (BC) Later Seymour Arm
10 – William’s Creek (BC)
12 – Ashcroft (BC)
13 – Quesnel Mouth (BC) now called Quesnel
14 – French Creek (VI)
15 – Lillooet (BC)
16 – Lac La Hache (BC)
20 – Soda Creek (BC)
22 – Van Winkle (BC)
26 – Fort Langley (BC)
27 – Spences Bridge (BC)
28 – Burrard Inlet (BC) now Vancouver
33 – Ladner’s Landing (BC)
35 – Victoria (VI)
36 – Nanaimo (VI)

I have a feeling that Scott's BC #1 was never actually meant to be a postage stamp, more like a demo for #2. No one seems to know for sure though!

I looked at Wikipedia BC#1, there is a short article. Basically its reported to be a proof, no number printed known.

I resent being mentioned in the posting as it reads!

re: A used copy of BC#1!!!!!! I doubt it!

1898, I said nothing insulting, just denying the fact that you are calling me an expert! I'm going to take a couple weeks off from making comments. It seems that everything I say gets taken the wrong way and almost every thread I get involved with eventually becomes nasty. I am finding myself getting very angry at times and that really isn't my normal state. A little while ago a valued member got so upset by some comments that she left us for a while. At this moment I understand how she felt! If anyone has anything to resent it's me, not you. That apology you attempted to give a few comments above was really pathetic and I am going to have nothing to do with any comments you participate in unless a proper apology is given! If the moderators object to my comments here they have my permission to delete them. If they want to reprimand me in any way that is no problem either. Time to look at a few stamps to calm down and then when I'm a bit more relaxed time to go to bed and discuss the matters of the day with my cat!! He's very sympathetic!!

re: A used copy of BC#1!!!!!! I doubt it!

Harvey,

Thanks for the posts about the British Columbia stamp issues. I was really blown away by a side reference on one of the posts about a very large, one thousand year old red cedar tree that has been located in British Columbia and would highly recommend all look at the post. While the reference for the tree doesn't look like a clickable link, it is, and the story presented is very interesting.

Jerrel

P.S. All of the discussions have encouraged me to take another look at what I have for my Canada collection and I have spent most of the day looking for nicely centered mint copies of New Brunswick Scott #10. Found one really lovely copy on Hipstamp but the price is beyond my budget for the stamp. If I can locate that one it will probably close off the New Brunswick issues for my collection as mint copies for my other missing issues, i.e. Scott #'s 1 through 5 are somewhat shockingly expensive!

@Nobody

Again, I'm not asking anyone anything!!!

re: A used copy of BC#1!!!!!! I doubt it!

Jack,

That is the nicest copy of the stamp I have seen anywhere! Really lovely.

And that is a great job of scanning the stamp so that all details are visible.

re: A used copy of BC#1!!!!!! I doubt it!
