In the past I've bought collections for primary trading material. Sometimes there are stamp(s) with Certificates and the stamps are very common which makes no sense to me, like you said getting carried with certificates.

I just saw an ad for the complete set of the Columbian series of stamps, advertised as being with certificates. To the best of my knowledge these were not faked unless you count a recent souvenir sheet. The set is not even mint so re-gumming would not be an issue. Why would certificates be important ? Unless they're thinking about repairs!
