These sound fun!
I expect they are from paquebot use, from items posted on the high seas or in port and handed in at the local post office.
This was (and maybe still is) allowed under UPU rules and the stamps used would reflect the nationality of the ship.
For example, a traveller sailing on a ship from Germany could write a letter or card on board, hand it to the purser and pay for the German stamps, and the purser would arrange for it to be posted on arrival at the next port such as London or Helsinki.
