Here is the front of a May 15, 1928 air mail cover. Andrew C. Schaedler was a stamp collector and, given the number of covers out there with his Steelton, PA address printed on them, this is certainly philatelic in nature. What prompted Schaedler to generate this cover? The date doesn't seem particularly significant. I'm probably missing something obvious.
Further, the cachet is new to me and I find it humorous though I'm not quite sure what it depicts. My first thought was that it's a baseball player running the bases (see the cleats and presumably the cap on the runner's head). But why? Because air mail gets mail there faster? The Air Mail portion was stamped on top of the runner.
BTW, Schaedler and his brothers founded an electrical contracting business in the early 1900s which evolved over time and, as part of a merged company, is still going strong.
Thanks,
Jim
