I think that the gray stamp is the Documentary as it is intact where the other stamp is missi8ng the right side - so it would be the proprietary stamp as it was damaged when the goods were opened. Just my guess.

Not sure if it's my imagination or not but the flags at the front of the ship seem to be a bit different. I must check my two series later to check this out! The gun ports toward the back also look a bit different.
@philb
I'm sorry I did not mention as the two scans were not of the entire stamp, as it would be easy to see the entire stamp would show which it was. My point was that with only a small portion of a stamp showing such as my cropped image there is a way to tell which one is the Documentary and one was Proprietary.
Any way the gray stamp is the Proprietary, see the scan arrows pointing to an additional line which is not on the Documentary stamp.
@Harvey
There 3 or 4 differences, but the extra line see scan arrow is the largest of the differences!

Perhaps I might be the only person who can tell the difference between Documentary and Proprietary 1898 Battleship Revenue Stamps that were issued around 125 years ago!
There is a difference and the challenge is who can tell the difference?
First off it has nothing to do with the colors of any of these stamps.
Second off it has nothing to do with any of the words!
Third off it has nothing to do with any of the numbers on these stamps!
It has nothing to do with the paper, watermarks, roulete or hyphen hole separation!
With all these clues and the two scans it might too easy!
So how can you tell which scan image is a Documentary or Proprietary stamp?
