When I bid, I am always satisfied with what I'm bidding on. Look before you leap!

''.... I must check at some point and see under what circumstances it can be done!!....''
''Yes, that is the question.''
I did have the principal of an auction call me to ask if i had meant to bid $4,343 on a lot in the following's auction. Since the lot was only estimated to sell for $300- $400 he figured, correctly i intended $43, he had made the correction. i don't recall the contents of the lot, but think it closed at around $250.
other than such an obvious miss-bid i've always considered a bid is firm and non-retractable.
I checked the profile of the person whose bid had been retracted. He was an infrequent buyer but in the last year he had 25 (!!) retracted bids. Seems very odd that he was even still allowed to bid!!
I once considered putting a ridiculous bid in on an object to make sure it got it since I never got into sniping. And then I thought "What if someone else did the same thing?".
@Harvey
May I ask what auction site you are talking about, sounds interesting, I might want to use it?

I thought the title was in error, because you've mentioned many times you don't use Ebay anymore?

There's 1 hour left to go on the item and I'm still on at $20 with a $25 maximum, a bit higher than I wanted but they are interesting Russia BOB. I just noticed that someone just put down consecutive $1 bids to go from $13 to $20. I have always stayed away from that kind of bidding, it seems like an incredible waste of time. I usually figure out what they are worth to me and put that bid down right away. Please don't go into the joys of sniping! I'm not morally against it, I just decided I didn't want to do it and saw no real need. If I don't get it from my first bid I usually just assume it wasn't meant to be. I'm going to run out for a drive and when I get back I'll have the item ... or I won't!
Edit: For the benefit of 1898 shipping is $8 which I consider to be reasonable. Some of the charges I see are unbelievable!!
I just got home and checked the auction. I won at $24.50 which was a bit more than I really wanted but it's hard to complain!! Of course, since most of my recent Russia BOB comes from Eric's World Books, he'll probably list a whole page of these soon! Probably for a lot less than what I paid for these. I was a bit of a hypocrite this time around since I had an earlier bid of $10 that I re-evaluated after a day or so! I've got a couple Danzig lots coming up in a couple days and one of them already has a bid tied at my bid. That doesn't look good!!
Well done Harvey!!! Sometimes it doesn't matter what your pay. It is the fact that you got it!!! I get it.

@Harvey
I must be a penny pincer, $8 is way too much shipping charge for me!

I if find an unrecognized rare it, and the shipping is more than I like, I'll go ahead and bid on it anyway, but this is a rare event to find these.

Occasionally with a tie bid I do get the item...most recent acquisition where this occurred is a mint France Scott #23 through eBay. This was especially nice since my actual cost was quite a bit lower than my maximum bid! Now that does NOT happen often.
I was winning a particular item at about $30 and now am winning it at about $10. There were two retracted bids!! I felt a bit nervous at first wondering what they saw that I didn't but everything IMHO looks fine. Of course I still might not win the item but maybe I'll get it a bit cheaper. I know it's possible to retract a bid but I certainly haven't seen it very often and have never done it myself. I must check at some point and see under what circumstances it can be done!!
