German ship mail abroad

According to the provisions of the Universal Postal Union, the shipping posts abroad "had the character of a post office in the home country located abroad".
Deutsche Seepost (later the name was changed to Schiffspost) exists since June 30, 1886.

German sea mail

Before the introduction of own stamps for the on-board post offices of the ships, one finds stamps such as e.g. e.g.:
From West Africa / with / Hamburger Dampfer
From the West Indies / Uber Bremen
affixed by the Exchange or Port Post Offices to mark the origin of such mail. letters with these
Cancellations are very sought after, but these are usually not on the stamps but next to them, while the stamps with the cancellations,
the exchange post offices (railway post offices, port post offices, etc.) have been cancelled.

Image Not Found

This rating applies to letters that, according to the sender's note, come from a place that later became a German colonial area.
They mostly come from Woermann Line steamers from the German colonies on the west coast of Africa.
Most often from Cameroon. Bridles that arrived in Germany with the same mail and were provided with the above stamps and did not come from German colonial territory,
value 66%, stamps, with full cancellation on the stamp, 33% above prices.
The mail from the Woermann steamers was mostly forwarded with the “VERVIERS-COELN” rail mail.
This railway postmark evaluates the corresponding price of the above Lisle on stamps according to which secondary cancellation "Aus Westafrika etc." was buried as a note of origin.

Also the stamps
SHIP LETTER
PAQUEBOT
or similar usually come from the port post offices, which took the mail unstamped from the ships.

On board merchant ships, especially the large ships, there were post offices that used their own postmarks.
The consignments written on board and franked with German postage stamps were stamped with these stamps.

So you can find the full stamps of the Deutsche Seepost on
a) German brands,
b) stamps of the German colonies and foreign post offices, provided that the ships touched these areas,
c) Foreign brands only if there were corresponding agreements with the countries.

The post offices on board the ships were equipped with their own stamps over time by the Deutsche Reichspost.

DEUTSCHE SEEPOST / LINIE HAMBURG NEW YORK
DEUTSCH-AMERIKANISCHE SEEPOST / BREMEN-NEW YORK
DEUTSCHE SEEPOST / LINIE BREMEN-LA PLATA
DEUTSCHE SEEPOST / LINIE HAMBURG SUDAMERIKA
DEUTSCHE SEEPOST / LINIE HAMBURG WESTAFRIKA
DEUTSCHE SEEPOST / NEU GUINEA ZWEIGLINIE
DEUTSCHE SEEPOST / SHANGHAI—TIENTSIN
DEUTSCHE SEEPOST / POLARFAHRT / NORDDEUTSCHER LLOYD
etc. etc.

By far the rarest of these sea postmarks is the stamp of the Mediterranean Line shown above on the left (stack of letters with postmark "a" or "c" letters, as well as postmark "b").

German Navy Ship Mail

According to the service regulations, the naval posts on board the warships were active for the duration of the stay in foreign waters.
Their task was the exchange of official and private letters with their homeland.
The Deutsche Reichspost stamps were used to frank these marine ship mail shipments.
Stamps with the inscription KAIS. GERMAN MARINE SHIPMAIL used.

For detailed information see the manual and stamp catalog "Deutsche Marine-Schiffspost" by Fr. Crusemann.

Special Postage Stamps for Naval Ship Posts

1897. Postcards from the Deutsche Reichspost with a curved overprint "Only for marine shipping posts" Ia. 10 Pfg. carmine.

cash stamps
Pisa cash postage. On the voyage of the transport steamer "Pisa" (Marine Ship Mail No. 2) to relieve teams in East Asia, which started at the end of June 1902, there were already no 5 Pfg. stamps left on July 7th.
The purser carried out the cash franking prescribed for such cases (posting stamp top left, small 5 in black ink bottom left.
Subsequent franking in Berlin C 1 or C 2). A few post-frankings from Tientsin are also known.

Field post of the Venezuela blockade (12/20/1902 - 2/25/1903).
At the end of 1902, Germany and England joined forces to blockade the entire Venezuelan coast in order to atone for breaches of the law by the Castro government in Venezuela against European companies.
The German squadron seized the sector west of La Guaira;
it consisted of the cruisers Vineto (Naval Shipmail No. 1), Gazelle (No. 10), Falke (No. 40), Panther (No. 47), Sperber (No. 59), the training ships Charlotte (No. 16 ), Stosch (No. 19),
and the transporter Sibiria (No. 65), whose naval ship post dated 23.1. to February 23, 1903 was handed over to the Venezuela guard ship "Restourador", which was classified as a prize.
Field post rate from January 15 to February 25, 1903.
Two naval posts only had field post freedom for a very short time, namely Nos. 16 to 19.1. and No. 19 to January 23, 1903.

Special postage stamps from German sea posts

A. Hapag
The stamps, approved by the Deutsche Reichspost and therefore to be regarded as German stamps, were used to frank postal items from the Hapag steamers
taken from and each port in the West Indies and the Central and South American mainland (Venezuela).
Their use was only permitted on sea voyages and in West Indian ports, and only for postal items that were transported with a Hapag-Damper and delivered to the post offices by it.
The stamps were assigned to the respective steamer by the main agency in St. Thomas according to the presumed consumption on the trip.
Postage: per ounce (= 30 grams) 10 cents gold = 40 Pfg. = 5 pence.

Cancellations: ship and agency, mostly rubber stamps (handwritten date), pen cancellation. St. Thomas ring stamps, Venezuelan ports stamps, "P" (blue in circle).
In 1875 the following steamers provided the West India service (main line): Franconia, Rhenania, Alernannia, Germania, Vandalia, Saxonia, Suevia;
(branch lineage): Lotharingia, Maracaibo; last one on the Maracaibo-Curacao line soon withdrawn.
In 1878 the following special ships were put into service: Borussia, Saxonia, Teutonic, Bavaria; 1879 "Lotharingia" for St. Thomas—Gulf of Mexico.

Mixed frankings, created by sticking on English stamps as postage for further transport of the mail item in question.
Conversely, postal items from English ships or consular post offices for onward transport with Hapag steamers had to be franked with these stamps.
Mixed frankings with stamps from other countries have also become known in a few items. Very rare!

When the West Indian postal areas joined the Universal Postal Union in 1880—1881, the stamps that Hapag had already withdrawn in 1879 became superfluous.

For Hapag's 50th anniversary publication, Giesecke and Devrient, Leipzig, reprinted a new plate in 1896, signed 14.
Another reprint in 1938 on the occasion of the exhibition of the "German collectors' community", edition 20048 pieces in letterpress in sheets of 12 pieces, was 1:1 (10.—).
A third letterpress reprint of No. 2, signed 11.5:10, with watermark and verso imprint "Reprint 1955" (edition 120,000 pieces), was made in 1955 by Gebr. Hoesch, Hamburg, with the halves of the bow being 16 each Stamps but 33 mm gutter next to each other inverted (2.50).
A fourth reprint of No.2 in block form (80:111 mm), containing 4 stamps, with block edge inscription HAPAG/Westindien-Postdienst/ 1875/NORDPOSTA/1975/Tag der Hapag-Stamp; comb. Offset printing and embossing, signed Ks 11.25:9.75, reverse imprint on the edge of the block "Reprinted with kind permission/of Hapg-Lloyd AG in favor of the/Society for German Postal History e.V./district group Hamburg".
This block was also stamped by the NORDPOSTA 1975 exhibition management (stamp in the shape of a ship, red).
