The term "paste-up" applies only to coils. It is the way strips of sheet stamps were pasted together to make long coils of 500 stamps.
This commemorative stamp of 1927 is simply a damaged stamp that has been forcibly removed from the envelope rather than being soaked and has extensive thinning as a result as well as part of the paper still in adherence.

Thanks, Roy. Good to know how that term is used. The only envelope remains are the darker bits along the edge of the pasted area. When removed from its envelope, the tear seems to have lifted about a 50 mm. wide layer from the stamp itself. The 1/3 'under' strip does pass more light than the 2/3 'over' area, so is thinner. Into the bin she goes!

For reference, this is an example of a paste-up strip:

Great stamps Roy, those things are damn hard to find. The only ones I have are also a strip of four - war tax coils. Sorry can't show picture!
I have this #142 Map of Canada which appears, from the back, to be a paste-up ... a rather ragged one! The embossed effect on the back and the print on the front appear continuous across the seam. Would this be of interest to any collectors, do you think, or worth any premium?
Thanks,
Hugh
