The glossy or type I is a deep dark black and type II dull or less deeper black. They are hard to ID if you only have one copy. It´s best to put several copies side by side under a good light. It will then become apparent.

The shade of the stamps don´t make a difference in the type of overprint.
In the picture, the stamp on the right is the type II ?

For me the difference is easier to spot in the first pictures.
I was able to separate out my type II’s.

Is there a trick or simple way to determine whether the surcharge is dull or glossy?
