Hi all,

recently acquired this cover from our local club auction.

It has a fascinating marking that looks like a TB or Orthodox Christian (or maybe Antiochian or Coptic) symbol. It is in purple and includes a double barred cross between "C" and "P" and above "2" all within a circle.

Any idea what it is? Could it be related to the censor label?

I'm assuming it was made in Lebanon, but maybe it's US?

re: Help on auxiliary marking on Lebanese cover to US

David: The date is 1942. The cross is the "Lorraine Cross" symbol of the Free France forces. (Chosen because it was Jeanne d'Acc symbol, patron saint of France) Lebanon at the time was still technically a French Mandate region as the last French troops left at the end of 1946. While it was under the Vichy Government for a while, the British and Free France troops invaded the region in 1941, and Lebanon and Syria remained under Free France forces until the end of the war, although there was a lot of political turmoil in the region. (check Wiki: French Mandate in Lebanon and Syria, and Free French Forces)

So my guess is a Free France cancel
I am not sure what the CP stands for.

Maybe it's the handstamp of the censor who examined the contents? CP #2?

There is a Lebanon Philately Group on Facebook with a number of world experts on Lebanon stamps.
One could ask for an opinion if interested further.

Hi Roy

On your covers I note that it is written either, text in English or écrit en français. Do you have any idea if this was required to summon the knowledgeable censor?

That is exactly correct. You will find such a notation on all international censored covers (except David's example, but it may be under the tape, or written on the back -- where it is not supposed to be).

re: Help on auxiliary marking on Lebanese cover to US

Roy,

yes, I am aware it's to a Quaker School. I actually thought it was the Quaker school that coordinates with another school at which my friend teaches, but she said there is a Quaker school in Media, but the one with which she coordinates is in Bryn Mawr.

My daughter attended a Quaker school her final two years of high school (Oakwood Friends in Poughkeepsie)

All,

thanks you all for taking the time to give me answers. I learned a lot, including both postal history and much more about Free French forces in North Africa
