My greatest regrets are not what I didn’t buy, but what I did! Knowing what I know now, I would counsel my younger self to cancel all the new issue standing orders and other modern mint sets and use the money to buy only used classics on & off cover with good cancels.
There’s nothing wrong with collecting modern mint - whatever makes you happy, eh - but I personally get much more enjoyment now from the older issues.
Me Too ! What a flood of stamps were created after my 1969 Scott International...i scroll through the auction looking for oldies !
There's an upside to looking for oldies. I was at the local stamp fair yesterday, going through Commonwealth books. It didn't take long, a few pages of oldies and dozens of pages of new issues (post 1945). I got through lots of books very quickly.
The trouble with selling oldies here is that there is a desire by buyers to pay a tiny fraction of catalogue value. I usually sell at 35-40% of SG, so selling here, when everyone seems to want 10% of Scott, just isn't feasible.
I really should have bought all my KGV stuff when I was 12!!!
Just bought my last two issues for the Great Britain Kings pre-Elizabeth (Scott #’s 176 and 209) and am very much looking forward to their delivery. Of course, Stanley Gibbons does list additional varieties but, for now, I will be satisfied with the issues in my Scott specialty album pages. They are two issues which frankly I never expected to acquire so are very special to me.
And, of course, there are the official stamps but they are likely not a possibility to complete.
Dave: If you bought the KGV stamps when you were 12 wouldn’t they have been new issues?
Just asking the question.

Dave: There’s a reason I don’t post my mug shot here. It would turn my “geezer” jokes back on me in an unflattering way! Good on you for being brave mate!

There was a lot of stamps I didn't buy when I was in my teens in the late 1970s because they were too expensive!
And procrastination wins again! Those stamps are showing up in my 60% of face postage lots today!
"Looking back on younger days i think of opportunities wasted"
Looking back on younger days i think of opportunities wasted i really wanted a stamp or cover but was stubborn and wanted it at my price and the item went away. A few of you might relate... i didn't grasp that the next transaction could be to my advantage and i did not have to lose an item over the cost of a single beverage.
