THANK YOU to Steve Wilner (cardstamp) of Father and Son stamps for a nice off paper donation to SFTW!
I’ll separate on and off paper foreign and mix them up so that they will be more fun for the Vets to sort.
The big box is now about half full.
If you send your donations directly, perhaps mention Stamporama?
On behalf of the Vets - many thanks. They have given so much, can we not give a little in return?
Thanks for the shout-out Theresa. We have had a crappy past three months here, dealing with various issues, so I've been laying low recently. However, I think I will start getting active on SOR again (and with the rest of my life) shortly.
We are now over 1 Million stamps collected (on our journey to 1.5 Million) so donations are still gratefully accepted. And, while a damaged stamp is still valuable for the "counting" and art-project aspects, we also accept non-damaged stamps. Some have even been donated with instruction that they could be sold and the proceeds used to defray our various costs above what I can reasonably afford to pay personally (website, postage, art supplies, building the "History of the Holocaust" stamp album, etc).
Unfortunately, postage costs to Canada can be pricey (which accounts for the slow build up) and I'm not in a position to pay for that (in cash, or from my few unused US stamps). I still appreciate the support from everyone though!
Dave.
Thanks to the holocaust stamp project folks for touching base here.
Your idea about selling a few donations to finance your expenses is quite interesting. Right now, my primary expense is shipping everything up to Virginia from Florida. The rest is fairly trivial and I’m paying out of pocket. I might possibly post a fundraiser auction here selling some of my duplicates. Hmmmm much to consider!
It seems like a perfect match to team up with you and ship the damaged to add to your efforts to reach that 1,500,000 goal. Have you done any research to consider the most economical weight to ship from USA to Canada? And do you have some kind of charitable number to avoid import taxes? But - damaged have ZERO value so that shouldn’t be an issue.
Those darn postage rates are a pain in the rump! The two ounce rate is $1.45, and that would ship about 200 off paper. Still that’s almost a penny a stamp and not a great deal. Larger weights would reduce cost per stamp.
If only we could find someone near the border to hand carry them across.
I purchased a mix for a total of $70 including shipping and sold a few from the mix to help pay for it. I probably would have gotten more bids if I had mentioned that the proceeds were to fund the donations. Live and learn, eh? That might be an option you can also consider.
In any case, I really like the idea of teaming up to help you. If we can find an economical shipping solution, folks here in the USA could ship both their donations here and be combined for one box to send to you.
Thank you to everyone here in Stamporama who has donated to either group! Lots of Good folks here, eh?
. A new thank you note from SFTW for the last big box. Thank you to my Stamporama buyers who made it possible for me to purchase that last big box, 95% of which was donated.
I am curious how the this group organize their collections and more about their stamp journey. Is it any different than just giving anyone stamps? It could be an interesting human interest story.
I’m not sure what you mean, Al. Are you asking about the history of SFTW? As far as I know they were started during WW2, 1942, to give the wounded Soldiers something to do while recovering. They were run by the Lion’s club for a long time.
The sorting progresses!
Here’s the work table that I set up in the guest room for the SFTW donation stamps. I wanted to keep these separate from the stuff in my stamp den, plus I needed more room. Everything goes into one of these boxes;
USA mint for postage
USA off paper,
USA on paper,
Foreign on paper,
Foreign off paper,
CTOs & phantasy - these tend to be too large to allow easy “mixing”. And they are often tacky for some reason and stick to other stamps. Cheap glue perhaps?
And lastly…
Damaged for the recycle bin or to the holocaust project.
If I’m sorting a batch that I purchased there is also a box for me to further examine and possibly keep.
Happy stamping friends!
I recently sent a large Flat-Rate box of off-paper worldwide to the STFW
WOW! That’s a boatload of stamps! They will be thrilled. Thank you!
Just arrived - this thank you card from Stamps for the Wounded addressed to Stamporama in care of me. The last donation was a BIG one - three flat rate LARGE priority boxes crammed full of USA and foreign mixes. Thank you to everyone who contributed!
Please note that I will continue to work on behalf of the Vets, so donations are still very welcome. Let’s never cease to honor and appreciate their service on our behalf. Thanks!
Well done. Earning your wings for sure.
Dan C.
i have been sending them an envelope per month..its painless.
Two more boxes are being filled and shipped to Stamps for the Wounded this week. Check out all the stamps on the boxes - five sides are covered - lol - that was an adventure. And a pic of my dad, a World War 2 Veteran, and my mom the war bride can be seen in the background.
On behalf of the Veterans - thank you for your support and donations.

I can't help but think that your local post office employees must dread seeing you standing in the waiting line! Those boxes would give my post office clerks a bad case of clenched teeth.

It’s all about a bringing positive attitude …
When hubby brings these to the post office he always gives the clerks a pamphlet with information about Stamps for the Wounded and explains that by helping post these they are also doing a nice thing for a deserving veteran. The clerks, many of whom are veterans themselves as the United States Postal Service is one of the largest employers of American veterans, usually seem more than happy to help. A few say thank you for thinking of the veterans.
A smile can go a long way.
So many people when they need help at the counter are grumpy and then the clash with the postal clerk comes into affect. Smile, be happy, and chat with them as a human being just doing their job.
Good deal on hubby explaining what the boxes are for and how it will help the Vets. Thank you to all who has taken the time to donate for such a worthwhile cause. And Thank you to Theresa to keep this ongoing.
The big boxes arrived safely and Stamps for the Wounded Secretary, Bruce Unkel, sent the following thank you to all of you. I’ll add my thanks, too!
Our Veterans are heroes!
Well done Philatelia!
Today, February 23rd, I shipped a medium flat rate box stuffed full to SFTW.
A donation arrived today from joesm, thanks, Joe! I still have about two pounds of kiloware so I’ll probably send another priority box next week so I’ll add Joe’s to that shipment plus anything else that arrives. I’ll make a list of those who donated and will mention Stamporama and I’ll include that info with the donations.
In case you missed the previous conversation in my want to buy post, Stamps for the Wounded mentioned on their website that:
“ 5. Rather than sending a few stamps at a time, wait until you have enough for a large envelope or a small box”.
Multiple small mailings creates more work for the SFTW volunteers up in Virginia so that’s why I volunteered to consolidate smaller donations from Stamporama members into big boxes.
I also see that they prefer USA to be separated from foreign which I will also do, but they prefer the foreign to be unsorted. You can read more here;
https://www.stampsforthewounded.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/20181226_StampsForTheWounded_Brochure.pdf
My address is listed in our membership database.
I am not sure if the Holocaust project is still accepting damaged stamps, but if they are, it might be nice to sort out damaged from the sftw donations and divert them to Holocaust for their art projects. Any thoughts on this idea? The shipping to Canada is pricy, but shipping in bulk is probably cheaper. If any of the Holocaust project volunteers are reading these, please kindly comment? If this turns out to be a good idea, I’ll be happy to coordinate, sort and ship, but mint USA stamps to help defray shipping costs would be greatly appreciated.
So on behalf of our Veterans, thank you for your donations!
