I was looking through an old album of US stamps I picked up at an auction years ago. I remember finding quite a few stamps I needed at the time and transferred them into my Harris Liberty album. I dug out the album a little while ago and started glancing through it. I realized that almost everything from the 1940 - 1960 period was mint hinged. Most of the stamps I have in my album from that time period are used and quite a few have rather nasty postmarks. I know that most of these stamps are not particularly valuable but since I put most of them in using black mounting it will be really easy to transfer them over. I'll probably give the used stamps to my dealer who donates to a stamp club in his area. If any of you would have a use for a few hundred used common stamps from this time period let me know and I'll send them to you instead. It might take me a few weeks to get the transfer done. Some of the mint stamps are actually line singles and corner singles with plate numbers. There are also quite a few really nice coil pairs. It's going to be a lot of work but worth it in the long run!

Yeah, I can do that. It might be a little while since I had to order some extra black mounting. In some cases the mounting is probably worth as much as the stamp. But the end product looks much better!

re: An extra bonus

I've probably spent about 4 hours over the last two days removing used stamps from the 40's and 50's from my album and replacing them with mint stamps in black mounting and I just realized something - my God the US stamps from that time period are boring!! If I had it to do over again I would have probably cut the US off after the classic period. I find all those monochrome US commemoratives mind numbingly dull. Does any other US collector feel the same? It's really too late to do much about it now since I'm complete after US # 613 and most of the ones I'm missing before that are too expensive to consider and quite a few aren't even in my album. But on the bright side I will have hundreds of used US stamps to pass on to some "lucky" person! But now I really know why when I look at my US album I stop after the 1930's and then switch to the back of the book!!!

Joe,

yes, the stamps of the 30s to 50s were boring in design and commemoration: each state was honored every 50 years; and many of the orgs were, ummm, less than titilating: poultry producers comes to mind.

Today's stamps are at least less uniform in their monotony, but seldom do the subjects rise to the occasion.

And, frankly, I find little excitement in racing the Dunes and tiny Caribbean nations for the honor of largest number of stamps issued and never used on an envelope

" I just realized something - my God the US stamps from that time period are boring!! "

That may be because you are Canadian and the stamps aren't nostalgia from your youth. The stamps of that era through the 1970s were my era. I like the old one color engraved stamps because of the intricate detail. And I like the poster look of some of the mid 1960s stamps because that's when I started collecting.

I bought an album like you describe once on eBay. It was a Scott Minuteman USA album like the one I had as a teen. The contents looked like a teen collection too. I saw that all the mint stamps were in mounts so I bought it. What did I get? All those stamps in mounts were all brutally hinged! Like the kid had another album prior where everything was hinged! Argh! I had lots of pretty postage for a long time!

Your right, it all depends on your experience with the stamps. Actually I was just sitting here watching snooker on YouTube and was taking a better look at the stamps I did today. In the black mounting they actually look a lot better. Where those years used to be 90% used they will be 90% mint when I finish and I'm putting everything in the black mounting. They do really look a lot better and, now that I've looked at them again, they're not really all that bad. I much prefer them to all the photo based stuff that comes later. I still prefer the look of the classics though!!

I guess it depends on the era. From the 30’s to the 90’s the world literally ran by the mail. The USPS in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s had to print billions of stamps each year. It made sense for them to print a handful of issues each year using a single color. I really like the sets of the 2000’s. All had great subject matter and multi colored. That’s why I love stamps from any of the former European colonies. Multi colored and usually interesting subject matter. Always nicer than the stamps of the home country of the time.

re: An extra bonus

I've got most of the mint stamps transferred in, just a bunch of lower valued stamps from the mid 1970's and a bunch of airmails left to go. I now know the cause of that dreaded stamp album disease, "album bulge"! - black crystal mounting. It's not as bad as with my Canada album but it's certainly noticeable. I noticed one bad habit the original owner of the album had. He would occasionally write the number of the stamp on the back. Pencil is OK, but pen is not! Where he used pen I kept my used copy as well and mounted them both in mounting. A question that Scott's doesn't touch on as far as condition is concerned, what does this sort of thing do to value. I know the stamps are fairly cheap but I am curious. The stamps are all mint, lightly hinged now since he mounted them with hinges but they still look better than used. At least to me and that's really all that I care about.
EDIT: Just finished!! With the regular issues, not counting BoB, I figure I'm about 95% mint from 1935 to my 1977 cut off. Next decision - do I go for 100%? The stuff is fairly cheap so I'll probably just keep my eyes on the books here since it's probably too cheap for the auctions. No big deal, if it shows up, fine, if it doesn't, fine! But a big boring job is done!!

One of the very generous members of SoR offered to send me, free of charge, all the mint stamps I am missing from this time period. The helpfulness of the people on this site continues to amaze me. Thanks very much to all of you who have helped me grow my collection during the couple years I have been a member. Also I find that now that the stamps look a bit better, mint stamps in black mounting, I look at my US collection in a much different way. I used to check out the classic material and then quickly skim over the middle part to get to the back of book material. I now pay much more attention to the middle part of the album and those stamps are starting to grow on me a bit!!

Just got the 75 mint stamps from Mel in the mail this morning. Now everything in the regular US from 1935 to 1977 is mint except for a few difinitives and a few stamps I decided not to ask for because I liked the post mark on the used stamp. So I'd say about 99.5% mint in black mountings - really looks great! I also have between 300 and 400, or more, used US stamps to get rid of. What do you suggest I do with them? I've still got a huge pile of great material saved for Holocaust Stamps. They could go there, to the veterans group that has been discussed or just give them to my stamp dealer the next time we meet to give to the local stamp club in his area. What do you suggest?
