While Postmark Reveal does work, retroreveal worked much better.
I think someday, postmark might work closer to or equal to or better then retroreveal.
1898,
Try ImageSleuth and let me know how it compares.
I believe that ImageSleuth does have advantages when compared to retroReveal, unfortunately with retroReveal gone it is hard to compare, I can only rely on memories.

It's great. I was mourning the loss of retroReveal and had taken to manually manipulating my images. Your program works well and quickly.
Thanks so much,
Jim
Jim,
I am pleased that you like, it, and thank you very much,

Will it run on Windows 7 Clive? I know it says Windows 10 but I thought it worth asking.
Check out the images samples on the site!
"Will it run on Windows 7 Clive? I know it says Windows 10 but I thought it worth asking."
I'm surprised anyone has access to Windows 7!!
My other system runs XP
I do have a Mac laptop though but mainly use it to upload eBooks to iTunes and whenever I need to be on Zoom.
"DannyS,
I am not sure. I think that it will probably run, but because I no longer have access to any computers with Win 7 or Win 8 I was unable to check.
If you do decide to give it a try please let me know if it works,
Clive"
Hi Clive,
I tried out your new program on a cancel from a cover I posted in "New Acquisitions 20". I wanted to see the date on the CDS. I am running Windows 8, no problem downloading.
One of the features that I found helpful was I could scroll through all the images rather quickly.
Here are the images that helpd.
First is the original.
The second image brought out the day, JAN 10 and year 1883.
I compaired this with Postmark Reveal and found the results were better in this application.
Vince
Danny and Vince,
Thanks for confirming that it runs on Win 7 & 8.
As a few people have now confirmed this, I am changing the minimum requirements on the web page to Win 7.
And Vince thanks for the example, I am pleased that you are finding it useful.
Clive
Clive,
Just downloaded ImageSleuth and tried it out - works great!
Thank you!
Sir, I've tested this out on various weak cancels of the revenue type, excellent results returned in most cases!
Top drawer!
Well done sir!
Just made a test for watermarks, could not get any positive results for a watermark. Do other members have different watermark results, if so what is your procedure?
To detect watermarks the stamp should be photographed with transmitted light instead of reflected light. If scanning, you should use a transparency scanner.
@hfbaker
Thank you. I will try this out.
I have just released an update to ImageSleuth.
The latest version, V1.1.0, may be downloaded from the link in my signature
New features are brightness and contrast controls which I find can be useful for some images.
I have also added drag and drop so that images can be dragged directly onto the main window, and it also now accepts files with a .tif extension in addition to .tiff
I have also put together a brief introductory Youtube video

Clive, I'm loving your work. This stamp is in my Ebay store. Check this out.
Northern Rhodesia 1938 1½d with the "tick bird" variety. Unfortunately, the postmark is in just the wrong spot. What an amazing difference Image Sleuth makes.
Dave,
What a nice find
and thanks for sharing, I am pleased that you are finding ImageSleuth useful.

Here is another rave review.
Had a stamp that the cancel covered the country name as well as most of the rest of the stamp. Even though I am not the sharpest individual when it comes to computers I was able to download and use the program with no problems. The images provided all the information I needed to make an identification.
Thanks for a great program.
Mel
Mel,
I am pleased that you like ImageSleuth, it is always gratifying to hear of someone making use of my software
Clive
Hello Clive,
I am highly appreciative of all you have done over the years, to add to the ease and enjoyment of philately, for everyone.
Just a FYI; I use an older PC, with Windows XP Pro. On this PC are programs I purchased over the years, to make managing and enhancing my stamp and coin collecting. Everything works just great as is, and would probably cost me a bunch of $ and many hours to upgrade to whatever latest Win version comes along.
I downloaded and tried ImageSleuth on my old XP beast, and am sad to say that it didn't work. I can use it on my Win 10 machine, and transfer images, etc to my XP as necessary.
Thanks again, for all you do for the philatelic community!
Hi Benque,
Thank you very much for your kind words
I wish that I could offer support for Windows XP, however, I use a 3rd party cross-platform library to create software that will run on Windows, Mac and Linux. Unfortunately, however, this library no longer offers support XP which has limited my ability to do so.
Clive
Hi Clive,
When I saw in an earlier post that it worked on Win 7, I hoped it would be OK with XP. Oh well, I posted only to let you and everyone else know that it was no-go on XP.
Cheers!!!
I am pleased to announce the release of ImageSleuth V1.2.0
As always this is completely free and may be downloaded from the link in my signature.
New features are:
* A progress bar along with a cancel button is displayed while images are being processed.
* User configurable maximum allowable image size.
* Option to automatically scale images down that would otherwise exceed the maximum specified image size.
* Brightness and contrast settings no longer persist when images are changed, but instead, now revert to the normal setting as new images are displayed.
* A new "Hold" control to optionally keep the brightness and contrast settings when images are changed.
Clive
Thanks, as always, Clive.
As an occasional retroReveal user I was disappointed to find that it had once again gone offline in May 2022. Just when I needed it most.
Determined to do something about it I dusted off my trusty laptop and after a week or two of furious coding had come up with a replacement sufficient for my needs.
My plan was always to release it publicly. However, before I could do so though, it would first need to be tidied up. Help text added, installation scripts created, and off course a web page for distribution.
However, as we all know life happens. Other priorities come up, and with the attention span of a goldfish I had soon moved on to other things. And, in the interim, PostmasterGS had created his excellent Postmark Reveal site so there was no longer a pressing need.
Recently, with some time on my hands I decided to make "ImageSleuth" ready for distribution.
ImageSleuth runs on Windows, Mac or Linux and does not require an internet connection in order to function.
Once it has been downloaded and installed, ImageSleuth can remain on one's computer indefinitely, and is of course completely free of charge.
It can be downloaded directly from the ImageSleuth website.
