Thanks JanSimon, it was GREAT stuff!! You don't see much of that kind of material around. I haven't made up my mind whether or not to collect Poland local material or Cinderella's. The Zarki stamp is in Barefoot's "Poland 1918 Locals", the Polish Legion stamp is not, but it's still an amazing find! There were also two Russia Wrangel stamps to add to my Minkus Russia BOB. Most of that material I've found and bought from a few SOR sellers since it's usually grossly overpriced on E-Bay! Thanks again for offering stuff like this. I've also bought some from Ian and Eric, very sorry if I left anyone out!
Edit: For anyone who collects Italy Gil has some amazing classic material listed!
As you may have deduced, the Polish stamps are no longer available and there is only one Wrangel stamp left
update: there will probably be similar material coming up in a few days, so keep your eyes open :-)
You must be trying to tease us! You just posted a singe German overprint a little while ago and I've been patiently watching since then. I'm on my way out for coffee right now, I am really into MacDonald's peppermint mocha's. I hope you don't post them while I'm out, but you probably will!!
You may want to take a look now...
Russian "Kitaj" / China overprints and some eastern Silesia in the pipeline
Edit: Silesia newspaper stamps have been added.
I just had a look at Barefoot and it says 10 000 were issued of which half were later surcharged. That means at the most there are 5 000 of these. I wonder how many survived. Great stamp, thanks! A lot of my collections are at the point where the regular stuff is difficult to add to. With Russia it's the odd stuff at the back of Minkus, with Poland I guess it will be the local material. It's difficult to find but every once in a while it shows up. I have about 20 issues and I think I got them all here!
I have a question about Eastern Silesia. I am only missing 2 stamps, #'S 31 and 32. I had the issues that were in the back of my Minkus Poland album and then thought, what the heck, and decided to get the rest since there's a small number anyway. My gut tells me that most of the ones we see are fakes anyway with almost no way to tell. There's no sense having them certified because the stamps are cheap anyway, except for the 2 I'm missing, of course! But my question, is there any easy way to tell if the overprints are real? I'm not even sure if they were faked but I'm pretty sure I read it somewhere. I really don't understand why so many cheap stamps have fake overprints unless it was being done routinely for postal purposes. For early Poland, for example, Scott says that fakes are "plentiful" and that for some "dangerous fakes" (wooo!!) exist. Can you help with Eastern Silesia?
I have a few books on counterfeits. Only The Serrane Guide has a comment about the "SO" overprint. It simply states that the counterfeits are well done. I think that's what Scott considers "dangerous".
For those who may want to look it up in The Serrane Guide, the information is contained under Upper Selesia (sic).
An interesting sideline is that the guide states that of the overprints on the Upper Silesia Plebiscite Issue of 1920, only 2% are genuine.
Jansimon,
Zarki.
Your 3 Heller stamp looks very much like an Abramsohn Forgery. The clouds are a dead giveaway as well as other differences.
I didn't see the listed stuff so can't comment.
Happy Collecting to all
Londonbus1......there's nothing wrong with collecting forgeries !
I just put a few nice rarities in the auction, a local stamp from Zarki, Poland and one Polish legion cinderella. There are many other interesting items as well, for instance some Russian civil war items such as Wrangel issues, so check it out!
