Dear All,
We in SOR have a bunch of very talented people that we may or may not be generally aware of. I'd like to propose that we become more familiar with them, if we are not already. To do this, I was thinking that a Directory might be a valuable thing to have to consult with.

There are those among us who have published books- to know who they are, what they have published so far, and how to contact them might be helpful.

There are those among us who have written articles- to know who they are, links to what they have published so far, and how to contact them might be helpful.

There are those among us who have particular expertise in a variety of disciplines- to know who they are, what they have to offer, and how to contact them might be helpful.

There are those among us who have lifetime collections, and now find themselves at the end of their own lives puzzling about how to handle these precious collections. To know who they might speak to in SOR who have faced these issues with others, and how to contact them might be helpful.

We have wonderful sellers with particular offers-to know about them and their offerings might be very helpful to our newbies and younger members.

I think you have the broad idea of what I am proposing. If this makes sense, then I'd like to be in touch with folks of like mind to try to implement it- or to kill it right away and spend no more time on it. I can be reached by PM, email, phone. Contact me at cohendaniel64@yahoo.com, or phone at 570 265-9681

Thanks for the listening.

re: Open Letter of Request to SOR folk

In rereading, I see that I left out another contact route-just respond on/in this thread itself. I'll set up a separate folder to keep together all responses. From that hopefully we'll be able to get an editor and assistants to tackle the task. I'll be happy to assist of course, but being so computer illiterate I cannot take any lead- the elected editor and assistants will be the boss(es).

Much of this information can currently be found in our membership database. Perhaps adding prompts/input cells to encourage members to volunteer more extensive biographical data such as you describe would fulfill your vision quickly, simply and easily.

I like this idea
Ask members:

* Areas of Expertise:
* Willing to be a resource for others: Y/N
* Current or past stamp dealer: Y/N
* Willing to advise others on selling of collection: Y/N
Etc.

Create a section in the membership section showing areas of specialization and for those willing to help others, they show up in their area of specialization.

Then do the same for those with stamp dealing experience willing to help others sell their collections.

Excellent suggestions, Philatelia and Smauggie. First, I'm going to get them into the folder called DIRECTORY for future reference and action, then I'm going to ask you both to consider using your expertise in an editing capacity when we get to the point of organizing interested parties to make it all happen. I know you're both very involved in all sorts of things, but possibly you could make time available to bring this into a reality. Just think about it-no commitment needed at this point. (For what it's worth, I can commit to assist. It's the lead roles that will need attention.)

re: Open Letter of Request to SOR folk

Dear All,
Just to bring you up to date on a tentative project just aborning. Whether it will be born remains to be seen-but for now here's what is going on:

If you have published a book, written articles, have a particular expertise in a variety of disciplines, have a lifetime collection & no heirs to pass it on to, or a seller with particular offers- this project is focused on you.

Right now I'm in the gathering a team stage- I am personally able to assist, but a team of editors is the goal to get it all underway since I am lacking in computer skills. If you can make time available, and might be interested in making a contribution of your skill and effort to SOR, I definitely would like to hear from you.

This Directory Project just might facilitate greater inter club communication and exchange, finding new friends and answering questions that you might have. Right now the focus is on getting underway, later on, should we become viable, meet & greet/questions to be answered/friendships will all be the eventual focus.

Your thoughts greatly appreciated- just add them to this string.
Best,
Dan C.

I've been thinking this over since the 18th.

I'd suggest there be something listing what we believe (Maybe Pillars of stamp collecting).

Let me put forth the most important number one! "We current stamp collectors ensure we do no damage to our stamps so future stamp collectors have stamps to collect" This should be the top priority.

David, I really admire what you just posted, but I really think that there are going to be many less collectors in the future, if indeed there's even going to be a future!! I know this sounds very pessimistic, but with the way we are messing up the environment I don't see much reason for optimism. I hope I'm wrong but within 30 - 50 years people will have a lot more to worry about than stamps. Please don't take this as a political statement, it's just my humble opinion. It's not worth much and I really hope it's wrong!!

Dear David & Harvey, you guys are doing exactly what the main focus of the Directory is about-reaching out and communicating.

On the point under discussion, it feels to me that both positions could be expanded upon, perhaps in an article, either singly or jointly? Either way I will include this all in the Directory folder for our future editors to evaluate and decide upon.

Well done guys.

Dear All,
To make it easier for our future editors, I'm thinking of putting together 4 contact lists for use by them, once we have editors:
1) published book list
2) published articles
3) area's of expertise
4) sellers with particular offers

All that would be required would be your name and contact info for the editors to follow up on.
Just send me (cohendaniel64@yahoo.com, or phone at 570 265-9681)
the info, or put it down in this thread- identify which list(s) you are to be listed in.

Thanks in advance,
Dan C.

I would suggest it is not wise to put personal info such as this type of contact information on a publicly accessible discussion board.

Dear All,
Just an interim report so far on what's happening with this thread. It has been viewed 403 times so far by the membership, and generated 14 written replies (about half from me). I have been contacted privately several times not part of the written replies.

What has not yet happened:
The many authors, published works, dealer identification, experts have yet to make themselves known for inclusion in the Directory. (Only a bare few have done so to date.)

The heads of the groups(Editors & assistants) have not yet come forth.

Looking ahead:
By this time next week a decision will have to be made as to whether or not this effort ought to continue. If I had to make that decision today, I would have to conclude that the idea is not being deemed worthy of continuing by the membership, given the exposure it has had and the responses generated.

I do note that it has also been on the MT radar, with internal views and replies.

There you all have it so far- let's see what happens this week.

Best,
Dan C.
