If you check the new auction items you will notice that this is the only place where you can buy two Maud Lewis's for under $1. Even she didn't sell them that cheap!!!

"What is a Maud Lewis"

Sorry, not everyone has heard of one of Canada's most famous folk artists, they even made a movie about her. She used to sell her paintings for next to nothing and now one of her paintings sold for over $300 000 a few months ago. If only she had been alive to see some of the benefits. Supposedly her husband Everett was very abusive as well.
Here's a short link: https://www.artgalleryofnovascotia.ca/m ...
I always used to buy my wife a piece of local art for our anniversary. I bought a Maud with a white and black cat with the typical Maud Lewis cherry blossom / tulips background. In the mid 1980's it cost me $450. I don't even want to speculate on a value since even her garbage goes for well over $10 000 now. She painted on everything including dust pans, match boxes, Christmas cards, etc. A lot of her stuff was done on pieces of Masonite or ceiling tiles, her favourite!! The Nova Scotia Museum has her small house on display which is also painted by her. Her paint of choice was regular house paint. Canada issued stamps in her honour and a couple are in our auction area, hence the "smart ass" comment! Sorry if I tend to ramble, being on my own no one else is usually around to listen to me!!
