Ah!
Conspiricy theories!
When I am overbid whether it is online or at a physical auction it's just somebody wanted it more than me! No crooks, no shilling just I'm too careful with my hard earned cash!!

Harvey - how right you are. We lived in the Madison Bouckville area of New York for 24 years - antique shops all along route 20. The local auctioneers knew their customers well and rarely got caught bouncing bids off the back wall - most country auctions are half entertainment anyway. As long as the pricing remains fair to both buyers and sellers all is well. In the middle of the winter it was like the old story of passing the $100 bill around to whoever was most in need.
One night one of the auctioneers lost his train of thought, stammered a bit, and said "Where was I?" Pointed to the back bidder and said "You were at $20", pointed to the high bidder and said "And you were at $25" Pointed to the back and said "The wall was at $30 but we forgot to give him a card". Laughter and cat calls - nobody was upset and a couple guys had a change of heart and it went for $45.
We had an antique shop at the time for a couple of years - didn't work out but we had a lot of fun until the money ran out. Ah to be young again.
One of the best laughs I had at a stamp auction was on one lot . A guy right at the front of the hall was bidding. He bid by raising a finger in front of his chest. A guy at the back of the hall was bidding and the lot went for a higher price than everyone imagined.
A few minutes later the two bidders met up and the guy who was at the back of the hall said to the other guy. Who was bidding against me? " It was me "said the other guy.
The two guys were friends, had discussed the lot between themselves earlier and that was the end of the friendship!
The rest of us had a good laugh about it.

Just watched “Banshees of Inisherin” and this made me laugh (if you’ve seen the movie you might know why, say”).
I just got overbid on an early Russia overprint a little while ago and it made me wonder who would be the over bidder. I quite often put sensible bids on early overprints for countries like Russia and Poland. Almost all of these stamps are fake but they still manage to get fairly substantial bids! I'm wondering if the sellers are having their friends bid the items up because I can't imagine a real collector bidding the prices that I'm seeing. It used to happen at antique auctions all the time, shills in the crowd!! I'm assuming the same sort of thing happens on line - not amused, but you really can't blame the seller for trying to make a few extra bucks!
