Hi Cheryl, check our penny black page, they follow this same order, use the lower letters.

The bottom letters determine the position in the plate. The top are simply reversed.
But I have a question: Why do you call them "Venetian"? That's a new one on me.

Thankyou Victor

I referred to the stamps as Venetian red due to their colour.
It separates them from penny reds. Why? Not sure but that was the info that I discovered
when researching the stamps that I had found in my stock box.
Maybe someone else can add more correct information...I`m no expert
just a collector. Happy New Year!!!

Had to ask because I have never heard it before. Gibbons lists only "rose-red" and "lake-red", while Scott adds "brick red".
(This coming Easter marks my 62nd year collecting stamps --- coincides with my spending 3 months in hospital after getting hit by a car as a kid!)

Hi 2010ccg
My Gibbons Concise 1987 describes the 1d and the 1.5d of 1880-81 as Venetian red - I was quite taken with this description and have bought the issue partly because of it. It's my first foray into the QV issues of GB.
I haven't got the Gibbons QV specialised catalogue, so I don't know how the colour is described there. But Venetian red sounds very attractive to me! The only trouble is the postmarks, at the level I can afford, are very heavy and obliterate a lot of the stamp.
Heigh ho! Neville
The stamp in question is Scott 80, described as Red Brown. SG is 167 described as Venetian Red. Not the original penny red from the penny black plate with only lower letters or the subsequent issue with letters in all corners.
"The stamp in question is Scott 80"
Thanks Roy, my error. I shall go and admonish myself with 40 lashes.

Happy New Year . I have a question
When collecting and recording the red Venetian 1d Victorian stamps how do you record the stamps according to the lettering? I see some dealers looking at the corner letter AB top BA bottom BA and AB and recording them opposite .
If my stamp is AB--BA on the top and BA--AB on the bottom which stamp in the set should it be ?
Is it of row A or row B?
Can someone clarify this please?
Thanking you in advance
Cheryl
