The "Bi-Colors" of Denmark and the Danish West Indies are quite popular, offering a dizzying number of issues, printings, and varieties. I focus on the Indies, and pursue these varieties, which takes close examination of the stamps. Fortunately, some varieties are easy to spot, others, such as the "Thick" and "Thin" Frames, can be a bit of a pain, but once one knows what to look for, identifying them becomes easier. Fortunately, the 3rd Printing of the 3 Cent value and the 2nd Printing of the 7 Cent value are much simpler to identify and can help in the identification of examples from other printings, including the Danish issues.

The example shown here is consists of the following: Normal Thin Frame + Normal Thick Frame (with Carøe's Cut) + Normal Thin Frame.

So, what are we looking for to determine which stamp is the "Thick Normal Frame?"

1. The outer frame of the stamp is slightly thicker than the stamps on its left and right.

2. The ornamental "fan" in the upper left-hand corner is a bit larger and "wider" than the other two.

3. There is a "cut" about 2/3 of the way down the right-hand frame line. This is known as the "Carøe's Cut."

4. The "plume" in the "fan" in the lower right-hand corner is missing its center "stem" which is only found with the "Carøe's Cut."

The "Carøe's Cut" is only found on this isolated frame and that of the 3rd Printing of the 3 Cents value (also position 72).

The 7 Cent stamp was little-used, and mint stamps are much more common than cancelled stamps and single examples on cover are quite scarce. The stamp paid the first-class letter rate to Denmark and Germany via the German ship lines from 1874-1905, meaning the "special rate" was still in use after Denmark issued a new series of stamps to comply with United Postal Union's (UPU) request for member countries to adopt its color code for stamps used for international mail (the DWI Coat of Arms series introduced in 1900).

These stamps are from the 2nd Printing consisting of 150,200 stamps with a "net" issue of about 75,000 as an estimated 30,000 stamps were overprinted in 1887 and the balance officially destroyed when the currency in DWI changed from Dollars & Cents to Francs & Bits.

There were 100 stamps to the sheet, 76 being "Normal Thin Frames" with one, Position 72, being the "Normal Thick Frame," and 23 Inverted Frames (all Thin Frames). If the above estimates are correct, approximately 750 examples of Position 72 can exist. I've been fortunate to acquire three examples, two singles and the item above, and they are tough to find! I'm searching for examples of canceled copies but have yet to come across one.

If you have and DWI 3 Cent or 7 Cent stamps, check them out for this variety!

Your posts are excellent - and dangerous - LOL! I am becoming a DWI addict! I started browsing the sales for DWI since reading your contributions and actually found a nice mint starter collection for a reasonable price. I collect both mint and used for most of my collections - but primarily used so I’m still hoping Santa will help me find something within my budget.

Thank you to my buyers here for making this DWI purchase possible. Now you know how I am spending what you are sending me! It’s the great philatelic “circle of life.” Winking Batting Eyelashes Happy

Hi, @Philatelia!

Thank you for your kind words! I only "know what I know" thanks to many collector/dealer friends and literature I've been able to accumulate over the years, along with a little bit of 'digging" on my own. If you see something online you're thinking of purchasing and are not exactly certain if it is "this" or "that" variety, printing, etc., I'm happy to help -- just shoot me a message! Also, and this is for anyone interested in DWI, I have a large inventory of items that deserve to be in the hands of other collectors as they will likely remain in stock books for years! If you send me a list of what you have and/or what you are looking for, I'm happy to let you know what's available and can list them in the Auction (something I haven't done yet but need to do!). Happy Holidays!
