I'm very sorry but I'm not set up to show a scan, but my 57 seems to be darker and duller than either of yours. In my humble opinion both of yours seem to be #56 with one a bit faded or less bright than the other. This is just my opinion and others may not agree, but my two stamps are much different in colour than yours appear to be. The other problem is that different monitors show colours differently and colours can oxidize or fade, this part of the hobby really can drive you a bit nuts. It's much the same as colour varieties with the early Canada large and small Queens, as you know from previous posts! Hang in there!!!
Picked these up in a collection I acquired in auction. one of them was indicated as 56, the other 57....the more I looked at them they seemed the same
John, don't take what I say as being necessarily true, it's only an opinion!! Could someone who has the two stamps please show a scan to show the actual colour difference? That should clear up any doubt!

I believe your two stamps are the same and are both 57. I frequently use Colnect as a reference. I set the filters to show half cent Newfoundland stamps and it shows 56 and 57 side by side. Number 56 is not orange at all; it is rose red. Your stamps are both clearly orange and appear very much like the Colnect rendering of number 57.
Veeerrry interesting. I checked the two stamps in Unitrade again. I definitely have both but have them reversed, no big deal. It certainly does look like both of yours are #57, not #56 as I thought. I guess I should change those two stamps around in my album!! Either that or leave them as they are as a reminder of just another stupid mistake!
I also would concur that both stamps are #57, based upon the colour rendering of your images on my monitor.
Thanks to all!
Do you think the designers were laughing when they decided on colors....ie.."This will throw them for a loop in the future"

No, I think they tried very hard to match colors,
which even today, with our computer technology
s not always perfect. In the 1880s there were
no digital color wheels with pixel counts. Tints,
tones and shades were a matter of the eyes,
and perhaps counting the droplets of a formula
in the hope off a perfect match. Then add to that,
different light sources and even weather conditions
and add a dollop of luck.
cdj....lighten up my friend.
This drives me crazy at times. Of the two, do you have any opinions as to 56 or 57?
