Type 1A Scott number 500 was an experiment involving a hybrid die. This hybrid die was not new a new engraving. Type 1 (499) under twice the pressure was used to create a new transfer roll. On position 95 from the lower pane from plate 10208 was a reentry was required. The experiment type 1A die consisted of ten subjects. The reentry could not for position 95 be used using the ten subject die, so a Type 1 transfer roll used for the reentry.

Reference "Washington-Franklins 1908-1921 by Martin A. Armstrong" for the above information.

My question is does any member have an image of Type 1 and Type 1A still joined together?

Because 500 color was unique, it is possible to find a type 1 in this color, does any member have a type 1 in the color of 500?

re: How the Type 1A was Created

From Siegel site, Sale no. 958 (2008) — Lot no. 690, sold for $9,000. Bottom row middle and right stamps are S.499 (Type I), the other four are S.500 (Type Ia):Image Not Found

Lot description:

2c Deep Rose, Ty. I-Ia (499-500). Bottom plate no. 10208 block of six, center and right stamps at bottom Type I (No. 499), other four Type Ia (No. 500), h.r. at right and bottom, radiant color, choice centering
VERY FINE AND CHOICE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE PLATE BLOCK WITH TYPE I AND IA ENTRIES ON THE PLATE (SCOTT 499 AND 500). THIS IS THE ONLY PLATE BLOCK POSITION ON THE EXPERIMENTAL TYPE IA PLATE THAT YIELDS A COMBINATION.

The Type Ia Scott 500 was created during an experiment of the Bureau in creating a new type of transfer roll. A die was made from the old Type I transfer roll, having ten impressions on it. A new transfer roll was then made, using the new ten-impression master die. This new transfer roll was then used to create two plates, Nos. 10208 and 10209. Since this is essentially a "lossy" process, there are some noticeable differences between the plates created using this method and the old method of using one die impression to create the transfer roll.

I assume you wrote the words above the image? If you did you might want to correct it!

Otherwise thanks for your response.

I was looking for a member who actually had an example like my posting said.

Jack did show what you wanted to see only they didn't belong to him. Really nice to see the post, thanks Jack! I have one each of #499 and #500 but before this post I had no idea how they were connected, thanks David, you always have great information!! And yes, in my inexpert opinion the numbers at the first of the post by Jack do seem to be reversed, no big deal!

re: How the Type 1A was Created

Harvey my friend.

Jack, did not answer my question. I have a few #500's back yearrs ago they were easier to find than they are now!

My question was not what a #499 and #500 in a block looks like.

My question "My question does any member have an image of Type 1 and Type 1A still joined together?" Very important for my point. I don't have the pair in question. Hope another member shares a pair in question that they actually own.

So if any members have a #499 Type 1 single in the unique color of Type 1A #500, that would make (I think) as an interesting item for a collection.

By the way the Scott Catalog does not address this! The Scott Catalog and Stamp Smarter only cover the very basic information. In order to ID Washington/Franklin head stamps a collector needs more than just the basic information!

An interesting point, alot of collectors miss ID #500 when they actually have an 2 Cent offset printed stamp!

I did mess up the lead in description which I have now fixed. But, I also don't believe I understand the question. The block is definitely not mine, it is a lot from a Siegel auction. But it seems pretty clear to me that there is a Type Ia connected to a Type I. What am I missing???

re: How the Type 1A was Created

Does any member have factual background information why T1A was created (482a and 500)?

Was the unique color an accident or on purpose.

The used example I discovered is not dated, just a smeared cancel, members please list your dates of T1A in your collection! I do not know of any study for dates for a right and proper survey?
