No it's not if you wait for a little while you get one for a lot less on eBay. Besides it's not an Error but was used as a training stamp I think.
Don't pay $50, it's way too much.

Thanks for the input, greatly appreciated! I'm not sure if I want it but if I do I'll look for a lower price!
If the stamp was released to the public by mistake as reported then the only way this stamp would be worth a significant amount of money is if it were used on cover or piece, that would be interesting! I wonder how many postally used copies exist.
Here is a cover I have to give an example of the ½d usage.
Harvey, if you want a copy of the green 'Poached Egg' test stamp I can send you one for free.
As you have probably read by now these were used to test stamp vending machines. Later colours include shades of Grey and a Pink type used for testing machines at the 1956 Scout Jamboree.
No I really don't want one. I am curious about one thing, if these types of stamps are just meant for experimental purposes why do countries release them to the public and collectors? I realize now that the only way this stamp would have any value at all is on cover because of what the newspaper article reported. And the only way the word error can be used in relation to this stamp is because it was erroneously released to the public for use.
Many philatelic items are 'erroneously' released to the public including errors (EFO's) of which there are millions.
There are many ways this can happen as we all know.
More fun for us collectors !!
" ... why do countries release them to the public
and collectors? ..."
Because collectors are curious about them and
want examples of all kinds of postal products
and useful gadgets. Were there no requests they
would not be releasing them.
Just curious what a sensible price for one used on cover would be.
I doubt if the value would be much since I believe, from what I have read, that many collectors grabbed what was out there and used them on covers to get used copies. The only ones that might have some value would be ones of the proper date. It's also very hard to get a reading on how many were actually accidentally released.
Over the years, I have had 4 of them. None in the last 5 years. They have all sold on ebay around the $20 mark

That sounds about right to me, I just put a bid in for one for 5 pounds and I might go up a little bit. The date of the one I bid on bothers me a little bit, yours are 1937 which was when they were "released". Mine, if I get it, is 1939 which seems to show planning rather than just using it as it came out. But who knows? I'm not even sure why I want it, except it interests me, and after all what other reason is there?
The dealer I use on a regular basis sent me an E-mail for this stamp. I'm really curious about it even though I don't collect either GB or GB varieties. The price being asked seems very fair ($50) and the stamp fascinates me. I can't find any examples on E-Bay and am curious if anyone can tell me whether the price is reasonable. Even though it's not an area I collect the "stamp" really intrigues me for some reason!
