There has been some discussion about the safety of protective sleeves made out of propylene,

This is a statement from the National Postal Museum.

Polypropylene is similar to polyester film in clarity. It is also used as sleeves for storing photographs, papers and philatelic material. The museum often uses polypropylene page protectors for album pages when rehousing a collection.

Of course, no product is a guarantee of protection if stored in an adverse environment (humidity/temperature. Just as there are risks from mounts, hinges, glassines, and manila pages or just common mishandling.

re: Protective Sleeves safety

I use small polypropylene envelopes instead of glassines for storing stamps. They are much less expensive than glassines. The contents are much more visible and the envelopes do not yellow with age. The only disadvantage is that you cannot write on them. For this purpose, I purchase small labels with repositional adhesive (similar to the type used on post-it notes).

I would be interested in knowing where you get the polypropylene envelopes? I get large ones for my photography but have never seen the small sizes that a stamp collector would use. Thank you, Mike

I purchased 3 x 2 1/8 " envelopes from clearbags.com. Unfortunately, that size has been discontinued and the closest option is 3 x 3 1/8". I have looked for other suppliers for the smaller envelopes, but have not found any. I still have quite a few of the smaller envelopes, but I am contemplating trimming the larger envelopes when I run out.

Here’s a chuckle.. I came into a fdc lot where each cover is carefully wrapped in Saran Wrap. Not an envelope of any kind.. just wrapped and sealed with Magic Tape on the back.

Big pain in the tail retrieving the covers. The good part is that it didn’t damage the covers!
