When taking Metro North from Poughkeepsie to New York City there is a tiny island close to the tracks with the remains of a castle built by a late 19th century and early 20th century arms dealer whoImage Not Found would buy up post war munitions and arms at pennies on the dollar. He had warehouses in Manhattan and Brooklyn but due the abundance of black powder he had stored the city told him to take a hike. So he found this island between Beacon N.Y. and West Point and built his warehouse which looked like a Scot castle (he was born in Scotland). My youngest son and lady friend acquired tickets for the boat ride and tour and we had a pleasant afternoon ...another bucket list scratch off ?

re: Bannerman Island

Last I heard, the structure was falling to pieces from neglect. Has there been an effort to rebuild it? It is a real shame to let this icon on the river to fall to ruin.

re: Bannerman Island

the State is putting money into it; whether it's enough, given a century of neglect, I have no idea. I suspect that photo is a before pix (or from some part of the island not visible from the eastern shore)

re: Bannerman Island

Michael,David, the correct name now is Bannerman Island Hudson Highlands STATE PARK, the picture on the brochure is the house on the island that the Bannermans lived on when they visited...you can walk thru most of it. The castle itself is really decrepit one wall being supported by outside steel beams. Its a 25 minute boatride from the Beacon railroad station parking lot. Its $48 dollars for a 25 minute boat ride and tour...i am glad i went. I have generous kids,it was a gift.
