re: Closed Book: Queen Elizabeth II

RIP, QEII.

I took this photo of the Queen in 1994 shortly after she stepped out of her limousine on her arrival in Prince George, British Columbia, to speak at the opening of the University of Northern British Columbia; I had to attend a session of royal protocols, which included the requirement not speak to the Queen:

Image Not Found

I was one of only two photographers who were allowed to photograph the Queen as she toured the city's new community centre, and then my wife, Susan, and I got a fast ride in a police cruiser up Cranbrook Hill to UNBC. It was interesting to see the extreme security measures that were in place, including RCMP snipers were stationed on nearby roofs.

No one told me that I couldn't touch the Queen, nor did I even think of touching her, but I could have on one occasion during her tour of the university when she walked not a step away from me. I blew through a dozen rolls of 35mm film on that pre-digital day, and actually got a blister on my shutter-button finger!

At the time of that Royal Visit to Canada, the "media" was commenting that she never smiled. Well, she smiled a lot on that day in Prince George! I'm hardly a monarchist, but it's been a privilege living as a citizen of a country "ruled" by such a remarkable, faithful, civil person, so unlike so many of our so-called leaders today.

A sad day indeed.

I have been fortunate enough to attend The Royal Garden Party at Holyrood House twice in my life and have fond memories of both visits.

When I was a child at Primary School we were marched three miles to "see" the Queen. We stood in the sunshine for what seemed like an age. We were bored and even the council bin lorry got a cheer when it passed. When the Queen's car arrived we cheered as it whizzed past us at about 40 miles an hour! We then trudged the three miles back to school. It was a great day, no lessons!!

God Save The King.

Edit

Yup no more Machins........We'll all be collecting Charlies!!

Bob,
I love your photo of the Queen. You really captured her at a good moment.

I'm feeling quite sad this evening. I think she did a good job in very difficult situations, given the political atmosphere and the many family problems that she had to deal with.

Regards ... Tim.

BTW, I hope that I can find one. I’ve just started a Newfoundland collection. I hold onto all of the QE2 silver and diamond jubilees as well as any other attractive commonwealth renditions of her.

Its been a weird week with some things happening as normal and other things postponed due to the mourning period. People have been a lot nicer to one another. More folkies have greeted me with a Good Morning or Good Afternoon when I've been out and about.

Have you seen the length of time folkies are waiting to pay their respects to Her Majesty? (currently 11 hours).

We were fortunate to see the Queens coffin here in Brechin. The cortege stopped here on Sunday for a 40 minute break as she travelled from Balmoral to Edinburgh.

Never has there been so many people gathered in Brechin. It was a quiet and respectful crowd.

At the request of Her Late Majesty, the lead escort for the funeral procession will be the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (R.C.M.P.). All the horses she road for the Trooping of the Colour, since 1967 were R.C.M.P. horses.

Canada is honouring Her Late Majesty on Monday. Here in Ottawa we will have the national service.

God Save The King.

re: Closed Book: Queen Elizabeth II

I never really gave much thought to kings and queens. After all, we fought off one of them.

Then, decades ago, the CBS News Show 60 Minutes did a special on Queen Elizabeth II. It was an extraordinary piece on the queen. I immediately gained a ton of respect for her. Other documentaries, docudramas that I have since watched (and own on DVD) really rounded out my knowledge not only of her, but also of the British Monarchy. She did indeed shape the UK and its commonwealth in the post colonialism era.

I have been watching the memorial broadcasts over the past week. She had a full life, and she was an amazing person. The world will not be the same without her. Too bad politicians and other leaders don't follow her lead as to how she lead a nation and a commonwealth. Even as a constitutional monarch, she was far superior to most politicians and leaders.
