I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.

I have this block of 4 of German Scott #237, watermark 126 (Network). The watermark is raised like a waffle. You can run your finger across the block and feel every ridge of the watermark. Any ideas on what may have caused this? Scans show what I am talking about, but may be hard to tell.

I haver never thought about the why this happens but it fairly nomal for some of the larger stamps.

One thing I noticed was that only a few larger stamps have this bulging of the watermark. All of them have fairly thick gum. So my best guess is that it is caused some-how by gum drying. The bottom stamp is Mi.195 from 1921. The watermark stands forth on the back. In the selvedge on the left side where there is no gum the watermark is normal.

Just my opinion.
