Seem to recall we had quite an extensive post on here a couple of years ago. Try a search on the board.
Thanks, I found the post and it includes the name of a book that contains information on the local postage stamps. The search was easy to do. I'd just never thought of doing one before. I assume it would only give results if the actual word being searched is in the title of the post. Now I must go onto Abe's Books and see if the book is available.
This is the name of the book: Strike, Courier and Local Post of the Elizabethan Era by Covert
I can't seem to find a copy on Abe's or Amazon but I'll keep looking!
By the way the name doesn't have to be in the title when you search posts. It's something we should all keep in mind when using SoR, it's very useful!!
Edit: I managed to find a copy of the book and sent in an order. I'll let you know when it arrives whether it is of any use!
The person I bought the Kaulbach Island stamps from on HipPostcard just got back to me and said she can't find the stamps and refunded my money. This has happened a few times on E-Bay as well. It always makes me wonder if they just wanted a bit more money. Call me a "doubting Thomas"! I'll believe this person since there wasn't a bid involved, but they better not show up again later for a higher price. Those last series are very hard to find!!!
Joe: That happened to me about two years ago.
I bought a seldom-seen Wurttemberg set for a good price. The buyer said he spilled a drink on them so happily refunded my money. 3 months later he posted the same ones, stain-free for a much higher opening.
They never sold but I bought the same set shortly thereafter for less money from another seller.
So karma is real!
Cheers, Dave
Met Cheryl for lunch today and she sold me, at a very fair price, three of the four Kaulbach Island series I am missing. I now only have the last series to pick up, which was produced in very small numbers. I bid on the set a few months ago without realizing how rare it was. If I had known at the time I would have bid much more. Cheryl told me what she had to pay for hers and it was three times my bid. I guess since I knew it was the last series and not out for long (common sense) I should have bid much higher!!
A couple of random pics for those that have no idea what Kaulbach Island stamps look like;
The boy scout item was one of the ones I just picked up from Cheryl. They were a late series and not used for long so tend to be harder to find and a bit more expensive - at least $50.
Being sought by Boy Scout collectors add to their rareness.
I finally finished the Kaulbach Island this evening. I picked up the last series which is quite hard to find - the Rotary Series with overprint "Service Ended 1984". It zipped up quite a bit at the end of the auction but I was determined to get it and had put in a fairly high bid. It's great to be able to put a complete in an area of your want list, even if it is only a small area!!
very nice, Joe. it's great to finish a thing
A few months ago I decided to collect "stamps" from a little island off Chester Nova Scotia called Kaulbach Island. They issued 17 groups of stamps from 1971 to 1983 to pay the cost of mail delivery to the island. It wasn't considered to be actual postage and had to be placed on the back of the item with regular postage on the front. I found the first 13 issues with no problem, the last 4 were more of a problem. I had just sent an email to one of our members, Cherryl, to ask about whether the last issues were very rare since I figured it was more her area of expertise. I then ended up on HipPostcard totally by fluke and found two of the 4 issues I was missing. Of course I had to register before buying, but it is sometimes very strange how things work out!!
