fabulous
that was a great collection, and all the better for this great card
David, if i have fun..its worth it..the German Safe album with the later Austrian stamps, two quality stockbooks with stamps, a hundred plus FDC's and the card i showed here.
Its always great to get a surprise.
One of our local auction houses had a 4 day mixed auction. The first day had 2 stamp lots, the second day had 29 stamp lots, the third day had 2 stamp lots and the fourth day and no stamp lots at all.
I didn't get to the viewing so I had to rely on the single photo of each item on the internet.
I left a bid of £10 on one of the first day's lots and won it on the opening bid of £5. Adding the commision I paid £6.20. On the second day I won one lot of 2 Boxes of covers, stamps in envelopes and some kiloware.
I picked up my winnings yesterday and was pleased to find the £6.20 lot had 16 GB presentation packs from 1989/92 and tucked away in a schoolboy album were three GB Greetings Booklets. Total Face value of £50+ !! Great for Postage.
I'm still going through the other 2 boxes, one of which is full of a wide range of Australian stamps mint and used.
You never know when you'll be pleasantly surprised.
Ian, what can we do ? Its what we do..tonight i am enjoying looking over my purchases from last night...tomorrow there is a live show in Albany and a good portion of our club will be there..its a ways to travel and i will not get the"bargains" from dealers that i get at our local club auction. I guess its just rubbing shoulders with fellow nuts like ourselves...i enjoy talking to the dealers who we have known over the last quarter century or so. Cripes, we are old, thank God for stamps.
Phil and I are now enjoying just one philatelic degree of separation! This is a screenshot of one of the 16 sheets from my "Compassion in Times of War" exhibit, which concerns combat medicine from the creation of the International Red Cross through the Vietnam War:
Note that my postcard doesn't include the inscription that Philb's postcard does.
Bob
Bob, thanks, we have a nephew who was the medic in a green beret group..he was fortunate to have been in after Viet Nam, i can not say during peacetime as i do not remember when peace time was.

And there are other incidental involvements in the wars between other nations such as the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s or the Arab-Israeli conflicts that could be added. The real challenge would be to find a ten year period during which American Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard or, since its formation in 1947, US Air Force members were NOT involved in some conflict somewhere.
Some might say that we are, sadly, a warlike nation, but so many of these involvements were to secure liberty and safety of not just American citizens, but the people of so many diverse nations around the world that some allowance for our proclivity to take action either jointly or when necessary by ourselves needs to be made.
A stranger walked in to our club auction tonight with large shopping bag of Austria..hi class album and two stockbooks etc; and no one seemed to want to bid too much...to i took them home...this card was a pleasant find for my German cover collection.
