The lazy creep had to be from the Red Hook, Post Office.. My sheet came in perfectly cancelled.
Probably Canada Post. They have been told to use a grease pencil to cancel uncancelled stamps!

i kind of suspected both places but cannot understand why the U.S. postal service would obliterate foreign stamps.
Phil,
Americans are notoriously ill-informed about geography; to conclude that an American would recognize them as Canadian is a leap

"Americans are notoriously ill-informed about geography"
Americans and Canadians are grossly uninformed about almost everything - geography, history, math, literature, etc. Before I get crapped on, I am an ex-teacher and the school system really is going to Hell!!! It's not the teacher's fault, we teach what we are told to teach, which sometimes is minimal.
I have received several covers like this. I have received some in the United States cancelled with a ballpoint pen which cut into the stamps. Several of my covers have come from various countries including Canada. I suspect the US Postal Service. Most countries don't even cancel their stamps anymore.
I have received quite a few uncancelled covers from the US and Canada
GGGGGGGGGGGGGogrfy
"as to geography, there is a very large Canadian population in Shrub Oak.."
I recall with some fondness something I read in pre-internet days. A survey of US high school students concluded that Australia was a small country next to Switzerland.
Everyone knows that Australia is not next to Switzerland, but I did here some fellows saying it was a small state attached to Queensland the other night. I think they were celebrating some rugby league game.
We (the rest of Australia) have been secretly mining and chipping Queensland loose from the mainland for years in the hope that they would float away. Sadly, I live here now, so I hope the mining stops
I'm an aficianado of real football, not the eggchucking version, so I didn't even know there was a game on!!
" .... Americans are notoriously ill-informed about

Oh yes, with a dozen exclamation points ! ! !! !!!!! ! ! !
And the few that know what an exclamation point is
have no idea whether to put the period before, or after,
a question mark or "!".
I also experience the dismay that Harvey explained so well.
I despair at the thought that one day we might well elect a person
who's entire personal library will contain but one book, carefully.
shelved, upside down.
I know we are grossly off topic, but here's a song I have posted before that talks about a certain group of people younger than us! You really should give this a listen!

It's amazing how ill informed people are. Where did they go to school?
Around Independence Day, a TV crew went out to a boardwalk and questioned people about what July 4th meant. Many had no idea at all other than it was a day off to eat and drink. Some couldn't identify the Declaration of Independence nor knew who Thomas Jefferson was. When asked some dated the Declaration of Independence during our lifetime!
And they have us surrounded!
I'n not a fan of Jay Leno but if you really want to shock yourself check out some of the walkabouts he used to do asking questions to the "average" person on the street. It's very shocking!! It's pretty much the same up here in Canada. I gave money to a young lady at a chip wagon a little while ago - a $20 bill for two hot dogs at $2 each. She had no idea how much change to give back and asked an older lady working with her to do it. By the way this girl was supposedly a high school grad. I could give many more examples!!!!

It's not just Millennials, but endemic throughout our countries.
The worst thing is that because of our egalitarian ideals, she,
and her classmates are given the unfettered right to vote.
That is, if they can find the correct polling place. And which, of
course, may well explain certain somewhat recent, curious
election results.
The one room schoolhouse
My grandfather was born in Vermont in 1884. This is a page from his arithmetic book. This book was used through the 8th grade, which was as far as most people went in their schooling. Thus they had to be prepared for life by that time. The book has 484 pages and goes into much detail on every aspect of personal and business math.
Your grandparents 8th grade education was all they needed, and greatly exceeded what is asked of the current crop of high school graduates.

This package that someone took pains to make a philatelic keepsake was ruined by some lazy creep.
