it's pretty rare, Tim. it happens, but seldom. of course, every number in the cancel is either the same upside down or could be a different number (there's a great Cheers episode about this in a raffle ticket).
Such inverted years on CDS date cancels do happen. I have come across a handful of such on GB Machin issues. Here is an example from 1973.
J. T. Hurd.
Thanks James. I guess they had to manually build up the numbers in the cancel stamp and just had it upside down on this date. I wonder how many days they used it that way before they realized.
Lintonville also is interesting. I'm a lifelong Minnesotan and had never heard of it. Turns out it was located in Kandiyohi county and was renamed Regal in 1915. Current population about 3 dozen.
Here's two I own with the entire hub upside down!
@Tom (BenFranklin1902),
That is interesting. I've never actually seen one of these hand cancel stamps that would have been used in your example. I wonder if any of our members has one that they could post a picture of?
@Brad (BigP),
How did you come across Lintonville? Are you a Minnesota Cancel collector like me? If so, check out my Minnesota Cancels website.

I think you misunderstand.
There was a time warp around the deci-centenial for the year 8,000 and several items were sprinkled back in time to 00000000
It seems to have happened at year 1000, 2,000, 4,000,8000, and might well be expected to reoccur during 16,000. That is why pople thught they saw Ted Williams batting during the 2000 All Star game.
Very confusing at times
Thank you Charlie. That explains a lot.
Regards ... Tim.
I found this cancel from Lintonville MN kind of strange. The year in the cancel stamp is upside down. Did this happen much? I haven't see this before.
