Just a question I can't seem to find an answer for! My copy of BC #11 has the number 35 as part of the postmark and with other provinces this would mean something. For example in New Brunswick it might signify Chatham, etc. Does anyone have a listing for any numbers for post offices in British Columbia? It's possible no one ever bothered to keep track since the Unitrade does not mention BC in this manner. If anyone would know it's probably one of the Canada experts on this site.

I think I just answered my own question and thought I'd share this ( https://www.stampcommunity.org/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=17831 ). According to the information given here 35 stands for Victoria and 36 different numbers are listed here. I wonder if any incredibly rich person ever tried to collect one of each!!!
1 - New Westminster (BC)
2 - Douglas (BC) Later Port Douglas
3 - Hope (BC)
4 - Yale (BC)
7 - Lytton (BC)
8 - Clinton (BC)
9 - Seymour (BC) Later Seymour Arm
10 - William's Creek (BC)
12 - Ashcroft (BC)
13 - Quesnel Mouth (BC) now called Quesnel
14 - French Creek (VI)
15 - Lillooet (BC)
16 - Lac La Hache (BC)
20 - Soda Creek (BC)
22 - Van Winkle (BC)
26 - Langley (BC) my area
27 - Spences Bridge (BC)
28 - Burrard Inlet (BC) now Vancouver
33 - Ladner's Landing (BC)
35 - Victoria (VI)
36 - Nanaimo (VI)

This comes from a posting on a site called "Stamp Community Family" by a poster by the name of "BeeCee" which seems quite appropriate. This is fantastic information to have available, but it's too bad the actual stamps are so damn expensive. There are also several numbers that are not identified but you'd have to be a very advanced collector to work on this!!

Thanks Roy! If you combine the two lists a few gaps can be filled in but the problem is they two lists differ in a couple areas unless the areas had more than one name depending on the time period. It would be great fun to try to continue the research a bit but you'd have to find someone with BC covers and I doubt if there are very many out there.

I just had another thought. These numbers were probably used for a while after BC joined Canada so if you had any early Canada covers from BC you might be able to add to the two lists. Might be fun to check it out!! I know several of you collect covers so you might want to have a look.

re: Numbers on BC stamps

By chance I was reading a book entitled The Royal Philatelic Society London 1869-1969 today which mentioned a presentation before the society by Alfred F. Lichtenstein of New York about the stamps and postal history of British Columbia. I believe that either he or his daughter, Louise Boyd Dale, formed likely one of the all time best collections of the stamps of British Columbia. Perhaps there exists an auction catalog from the sale of these stamps (or possibly documentation of these items from an exhibit) which might provide a source for a relatively comprehensive set of items from British Columbia. Now the trick is to locate any such related documents. I know that he was a member of the Royal Philatelic Society, London and suspect that he might, also, have been a member of the Collector's Club of New York since he was from New York. She was, also, famous as a collector/exhibitor in her own right from other readings in the past.

re: Numbers on BC stamps

The BC collection I'm in the process of buying is from a well documented complete collection. I am probably getting the documentation for each stamp but I must check to see if there are any other pieces of documentation available with the collection. You never know what might be there! It would be great if we, as a group, could contribute to the knowledge in this area. I checked the few early Canada covers I have but I have nothing BC related. Maybe if we could all check our early covers we might be able to fill in a gap in the BC numbering system.

re: Numbers on BC stamps

Just got two more BC stamps in the mail from my dealer - #5 and #6. One had the oval New Westminster post mark and in the other all you could see was Island. Since there is no post office for all of Vancouver Island I assume it is ?????. Does anyone have a suggestion for a post office that would fit pre BC joining confederation in 1881. The only ones I can find operated much later than that!!

Edit: I have a copy of Canada Post Offices 1755/1895 by Frank W. Campbell but I am not in the mood for searching all 191 pages yet - maybe later. It's a great book but unfortunately it's done alphabetically by the name of the town.

It's actually part of an oval postmark that says Vancouver Island Post Office, so the mystery is solved - sorry I forgot to say earlier!
