I was asked by a friend whose companion passed away recently to help evaluate her stamp collection. Quite frankly it is a curious mix of material accumulated by personal curiosity or interest, or by buying from the "Franklin Mint" like collection creators, rather than a serious focused collecting. Some are pretty, other just run of the mills.

Many US sheets, blocks and and stamps bought from the post office as well as a number of albums.
Some SOR members here may be interested, piecemeal of whatever, and if interested I can put you in contact or act as a go between. I will list the more interesting (for me) items, but there are also a lot of "stuff" including US Mint stamps if you need some for postage.

4 WWF collections of FDC in 4 nice quality padded albums 84, 86, 88 and 90 (originally priced at $65 per album and content)
Christmas Collector Panels (Norman Rockwell) in album 88
Olympics Album 88
US postage Commemorative Stamp Club albums 74, 87,89, 92, 93
US and UN All American Stamp album
86 Presidents FDC covers album not complete it seems.
US FDC albums 86-87
US All America Stamp album
US Gold Replica Album (forgot to note the years)
US Birds and Flowers FDC in album 82
US sheets, US Block plates, US Booklets, and US stamps from the 70s to 90s probably all purchased from the post office. Some in Albums, some in original PO packaging, some loose but pristine condition.
Other miscellaneous items, not itemized, include Canada Sheets and stamps, some supplies, including old Minkus and Harris Albums, few mounts, glassine envelopes.. and...I just covered the more obvious stuff, but if you are looking for something in particular, please ask.

I explained that for most US stamps of that era, the price offered will be at or below face value due to the glut of material out there, and that a dealer will probably not find it worth their time. That is clear. I doubt that there is anything of great intrinsic value, no inverted jenny, no penny black, etc... but then who knows what hides behind the surface. On the other hand, the coin collection she also had accumulated over time (SOLD), had several gold pieces bought when gold was at $35 per ounce... so who knows!

So if any members here are interested, by item, or bulk, or looking for something in specific, private message me. I can put you in direct contact, or act as a go between.

Thanks.

re: Helping a friend with a mishmash of US (mostly) albums,FDC covers, sheets and blocks etc.. plus a few special collections.

P.S.: To Ship that entire collection/accumulation will cost an arm and a leg. I purchased a similar WW collection/accumulation a couple of years ago because it was warehoused in the town where I live - 5 4' square boxes. I can't quite imagine what the Shipping cost would have been.

I used to advertise that I Buy collections/accumulations. I stopped doing that because it really bothered me to tell a person how little "their father's" collection was worth. The one collection (last one that I evaluated) that stands out in my mind was so full of gross fakes/counterfeits, and gross errors that it was extremely difficult to believe that anyone would buy it in the first place.

RR-have you considered the possibility of donation for a tax credit consideration?
Best,
Dan

Yeah I think it is going to be hard to extract much value from it, even with $1000s of US facial value.
Dan I suggested it. It is a tough emotional parting too, so it may take a while for the idea to mature.
At this time I am not sure how she will proceed.

Bob, you are right. Only a local purchase will make sense.

The look of disappointment on non collectors faces when they realize the million dollar collection is not even good enough to donate.
Even funnier, someone just gave me a plastic bag of stamps ripped of mail envelopes from her grandmother correspondance. I don't really know how to thank them for just dumping the lot in the recycling bin.
I blame it all on the film with Audrey Hepburn: Roman Holiday

rrraphy - When I worked in Fremont, CA, I belonged to the California Collectors Club. Great people. Are they still active? I would make them aware of this collection/accumulation.

Hey rrraphy.

For The Holocaust Stamps Project, each stamp represents one of the 1.5 Million children murdered in The Holocaust. So every time you throw those stamps torn off of envelopes in the trash you are missing a chance to make a symbolic gesture of remembrance for those children through a donation to the project.

As a former "Father of the Year Award Winner" (which of us didn't get one of those mugs from our own kids!) I know that you would sleep better at night.

Just saying...

Cheers, Dave.

I passed on the comments, and the private messages requests. It may take a few days to get answers.
It is a bit overwhelming, especially for someone with no philatelic experience.
Any one who has an interest, please let me know.
Dave (HolocaustStamps), the problem with donating at a distance is the prohibitive shipment costs.
