Could it be from a local/private postal service?
It's a Confederate local bogus issue
I find the collecting area of "local issues" intriguing. I have focused on the Wells Fargo Pony Express and newspaper issues.
What has made me shy about moving into this collecting area farther is the massively high prevalence of bogus stamps. And, since the designs of the genuine stamps are often very simple, fakes are relatively easy to accurately create and thus difficult to distinguish from genuine examples. I think one could spend an entire philatelic career doing nothing but becoming an expert on these stamps, and be fully occupied!
It's probably safest to collect these used on cover, but unless you're Jeff Bazos, it's probably unrealistic to consider completing even a small specialized collection.
A quick eBay search of "pony express", in Stamps, yields just two used covers, one for $4499 and one for $5499.

Thank you all for the feedback. I don't actually have any Confederate stamps but have read briefly about them. Perhaps this is as close as I will come. LOL
DaveSheridan - Do you happen to know which State it is from, which Weldon it refers to? Just curious.
Paul - The simplicity of the design and how easy it would be to fake are what had me questioning whether it was a legitimate stamp or not.
Once again this group has been a wonderful resource. Thank you all.
I copied this from The Confederate Stamp Alliance now The Civil War Philatelic Society.
