Since there is a paper crease leading from the left, right up to that area of missing ink, I suspect the crease ends in a scrape that removed the ink from that spot. It actually seems to go right across the top of the hair.

That is what I was thinking also. Before I put under microscope, it sure looked like some sort of error. Took me a while to realize, I was looking at a Portugal stamp. Could not figure out what country started with an R and ortugal.

Portugal, Scott #61. Not a reprint and not the greatest example. Question the leg on the first P in Portugal. Any information. See scans. The leg shows up better on the full scan than the one with the arrow.
