Having thousands of Machins from the 1970-94 period, I'm not sure there is really a market for them, not sure how many I've sent the holocaust projects but Dave's probably fed up with counting them. (he will be getting another box full later this month)
The first issue does not have a great number of variations and the latter series the variations are really only of interest to a much smaller number of collectors, those who look for direction of print, offset or missing bands etc.
Maybe look at some of the auction house sold listings from FVH or All Nations, to give you an idea.
Then of course postage costs will have to be considered, what will be the cost of shipping a pound weight, or more, of stamps. That is going to reduce whatever someone is willing to pay.
Edit. To add image from FVH auction on 22nd. Jan 2022. The right hand figure is the sale end price.
Hey Vic. I NEVER get sick of counting! It's for a good cause and keeps my mental acuity uh, er, hmm, meh, aaa ... good.
Plus, the machins are awesome for use in the artwork project (whenever the heck Covid settles down and I can get people together!!!) because of the basic colours and consistency of design.
Check out this incredible portrait as an example. The first piece I'd like to commission is one of Anne Frank using this as a template.
Cheers, Dave.
Dave, that looks a terrific use of Machins, Will pick up another mailing box on my next Post Office visit and open another box of my hoard, I'll put a load in sorted by colour/value, might clear some space in my stamp room, well a little bit!
Hi Vic. Thank you very much for your reply. Both I and our fellow SOR member appreciate your comments. We had both looked at Ebay listings and see listing prices all over the range. His intent is not to make a 'killing' from the sales but to give the potential buyer a good starting price to work with and hopefully find some varieties within each lot that make it a worthwile 'treasure hunt' for them. As he is an active seller both here and there, there is no telling where he would list them, if he does.
I myself probably have about 1000 used Machins myself hanging around here. I do have a trading friend from Colnect in Norway who I intend to send the majority to over the spring months. I have no interest in checking thru them so that will be his fun in getting them.
I did get a message from another SOR member stating their interest at 4.50 per lb. Comments from other SOR machin collectors are appreciate. As I mentioned in my first post, any replies are for information purposes only, you will not get any type of solication from my SOR friend on your interest.
Thanks gain

I would surely like to get in my hands some of those "bicolor" Machine.
I too would opt for a bag or two too of Machin's!
The question is;
" ... what you would consider to be a fair price for
a 1 lb baggie of Machins. ..."
The non-answer is;
I watch and often bid on large lots of used Machins
in auctions and the estimates offered by the lotter
is usually wildly optimistic. A five or ten pound lot,
off paper may go for $30-$40 or upwards of $150.
I believe the variables are, the number of serious
Machinistas present and bidding in that day's auction
and probably the distance the parcel will have to be
shipped. The glorious description provided by the
auctioneer seems to be beside the point.
If off paper, the person soaking the stamps may have,
by using hot water, or allowing the stamps to soak too
long, removed or damaged the phosphor bar (bands) that
make the issue so interesting and, at times, so complicated.
Keep in mind, by careful measurements in a dry climate,
years ago, I discovered that there should be 645 regular
size definitives per ounce. That comes to about 10,230
stamps per pound.
See, i.t was a wordy non-answer
Had a phone conversation with another SOR member in Canada this am. After pleading with him to stopped sending any more cold weather down our way, the talks turned to stamps. He mentioned that he probably had 5 lbs or more of used Machins in his selling stock. They are off paper and not checked by him for any varities. Having some idea of his stock, my guess is that they start with the 1st issues and extend up to about 5 years ago. I encouraged him to offer them in 1 lb lots here on SOR. So my question for Machin collectors would be what you would consider tobe a fair price for a 1 lb baggie of Machins. Postage would be from Canada and will be as cheap as possible. Just trying to get him some idea of interest from members here. Do not worry as he will not contact anyone who answers with any type of solictation. When relpies give him some sort of idea, he will probably make his own offering post open to the public at that time.
Thanks for any replies
