I have been sick of the traditional stamp hinge for any number of reasons; they come curled up and stuck together when purchasing which makes it time consuming to apply, hard to remove without causing a paper thin. I am experimenting with a cartridge tape dispenser that appears to be a very good alternative to the traditional hinge. It applies easily, is double-sided removable and ACID FREE. It is made by Tombow and I purchased it from Amazon. I've included the spec's and a picture of the applicator. So far it appears to work very well. What do you think?

Tombow 62108 Adhesive
$6.99 (Amazon)

Removable double-sided tape
Photo safe, ACID FREE
Instantly creates removable bond for self-sticking and removing
For use on paper, photos, cardstock, etc.
Refillable with snap-in refill cartridge
Approved Photographic Activity Test (PAT)
1/3 in. x 472 in

One thought after I posted... When placing the tape on the album page, it is best to have the tape be the length of the stamp from top to bottom as too little tape might fail to hold the stamp.

re: Hinge Alternative

I've used that for covers on some album pages. I have yet to have a problem with the four corner dabs - the covers are still in place! I never thought to use it for stamps. I'd be ok with it on used, not sure about mint. I would think that with my covers still in place after a couple years, a little bit would do on a stamp!

I only use them on low value used stamps. I use mounts for higher value used or mint. One other note... If you want to try this, be sure to get the removable and not the permanent!

re: Hinge Alternative

I still use the 3M Scotch Removable Tape 811.
I still find that it does a great job, with less issues on Mint than used stamps as it does not have the occasional adherence issue with porous, thin or uneven paper. It is rated Photo archival safe (per ISO Standard 18916).
I would not use it on expensive stamps, long term, but even on expensive stamps short term I have no problem.
Put a roll of 3/4 inch 811 tape in your dispenser and use it as you would use scotch tape, cutting hinge size strips (1/4" to 1/2") that you fold in half.

I know we have people who are scared of Scotch Tape, but this is NOT the same as the acid laced scotch tape used in the 50s that marred many stamps by "osmosis" even when not directly applied to the stamps.

In all fairness I have noted an occasional deposit issue, which does easily rub off with your fingers, and has no long term effect. It seems to be more batch or production location related than anything because it impacts one in a 100 rolls (I buy them in twos from Amazon, and when it (rarely) happens, I use the other roll in place of my regular scotch tape, but not on stamps). Go figure the real cause.

If you want to minimize the occasional deposit issue, here is a technique that works well. Unwind some tape on a heavy paper backing or plastic, then cut it with an exacto knife in 1/4 inch wide strips. Then lift the "hinge" with your regular stamp tong when you want it to use on the stamp. This extra transfer seems to remove any extra residue, I think. You can also reuse the "hinge" which also minimize the adherence and works well (deserving the "scotch label maybe LOL). This technique was taught to me by "penny" Selvage Kim (Have missed his contributions here).

We had many heated discussions on 811 long time ago. Ten years later, after my initial discovery from a dealer who sold me an album that used the tape to mount all stamps, I looked at some of my early uses, and it is still seemingly easily removable and neutral to the stamp and no hinge remain!
But to be cautious, use it in my opinion as a temporary solution (10 years?), and use mounts on your $100 stamps.

rrr...
No I don't own 3M stock.

re: Hinge Alternative

Does it leave residue on the stamp? But then hinges leave their marks on every stamp they touch but somehow deemed safe.

I use one of various types of Elmer's Glue Sticks to attach mounts and the adhesive is more akin to a post it notes type adhesive.

Since only a chosen few of us will live forever, (And probably we
will eventually tire of that as well.) I suspect that considering
what our heirs will do with the detritus and residue of our hours
of collecting pleasure, is quite common.
I know of several dealers who will avoid making a serious offer on
collections where a proper examination involves the tedious removal
of stamps from sleeves, so I am sure prying any but the highest value
stamps loose from any kind of tape fixture after ten or twenty years
attachment will greatly devalue the offer.
But good luck with the tape thing anywy.
