I love to buy and sort through big boxes of old covers. My eBay selling is just an excuse to do this! Especially now a days, the Internet makes research so easy! You can discover things easily that you wouldn't have bothered to do in the old paper days!
I came across this small cover in a recent hoard. At first I grabbed it out because I have a few customers buying meters. Then I opened it up and saw the card.
Sitting in my easy chair, I picked up my phone and spoke to my phone, "Siri, who was Secretary of State in 1959?" My wife hates when I do that, she thinks I'm flirting with a lady! Siri answers, "John Foster Dulles and up pops a bio. Interesting!
"
John Foster Dulles was ill with terminal cancer and died less than a month after this card was posted. Wow! Some powerful history!
Of course we know Dulles as the man on Scott 1172. Equating American History to my stamp collection got me through high school! And here's that page from my freeform album. Aside from my standard plate block, I had a nice block of 8 that fit into the page well. And one of two first day covers I own.
And here this nice little cover - chock full of history - resides in my collection on Page Two of the Dulles stamp. Fits in nicely.
I'll admit that I never looked that closely at the Dulles stamp. One of several purple small size commemoratives issued that year for prominent Americans, it just never caught my attention until now.
Ah, the little things that make collecting fun!
