I'm pretty sure that U.S. postage stamps are monetized forever. A lot of countries have an expiration, but not the U.S.

PROHIBITED POSTAGE
The invalid group is a much longer list than the one of those that are valid. Among them are postage due stamps, special delivery stamps, special handling stamps, and certified mail stamps.
All of these issues were intended for payment of specific services other than regular mail.
By now you probably have guessed, if you didn’t already know, that you also can’t use U.S. Official stamps, revenue stamps, savings stamps or migratory bird hunting and conservation issues (duck stamps) as postage.rom Linns "
Yeah, special delivery stamps cannot be used as postage.
And yet they are, i have a small collection of envelopes i have received in the mail using labels, coupons and such as postage...and the mail goes through.
Pre-Civil War postage also was demonitized. From the DMM:
1.2 Postage Stamps Valid for Use
All postage stamps issued by the United States since 1860, unless listed in 1.3, are valid for postage from any point in the United States or from any other place where U.S. Mail service operates. Precanceled stamps may be used to pay regular postage and fees for extra services if the mailpiece is endorsed under the standards for the class of mail and service requested. Precanceled postage may be used only by permit holders authorized under 3.0. Unless excepted by standard, the total postage affixed must equal at least the postage charge for the class of the mail and, if applicable, the fee for the extra service requested. All nondenominated postage and makeup price stamps, including official mail stamps, are valid at the original prices of issue. Exception: Semipostal stamps.
1.3 Postage Stamps Invalid for Use
The following are not valid to pay postage for U.S. domestic or U.S.-originated international mail:
Postage due, special delivery, special handling, and Certified Mail stamps.
Stamps of other countries.
United Nations stamps, unless on mail deposited at the United Nations, NY.
U.S. stamps that are mutilated or defaced; cut from stamped envelopes, aerogrammes, or stamped cards; covered or coated in such a manner that canceling or defacing marks cannot be printed onto the stamps; or overprinted with an unauthorized design, message, or other marking.
Nonpostage stamps, such as migratory-bird hunting and conservation stamps, U.S. saving and thrift stamps.
Parcel Post stamps, however, are valid for postage.
As Phil as demonstrated, give it a try! If you have some Special Delivery stamps, just include them in the bunch of stamps necessary to make up the current rate. Other members have said that nobody at the post office will be bothered to add up all those stamps... and I believe that extends to looking for Special Delivery stamps. Probably will work!
BenFranklin is right. On the other hand if someone does notice it and it arrives at its destination Postage Due the recipient might not be so understanding.
Nothing ticks me off more than to receive stamps from a dealer with Postage Due. It shows a lack of professionalism and attention to detail...or worse. I generally don't go back.
Carol is correct. I won some nice items at an online stamp auction a while back. The auctioneer is very well known. I had to pay a 15% buyer premium, plus $20 postage and insurance fees. The parcel arrived postage due. I have never bought from them again despite their refunding me for the extra I had to pay..
Ha! My favorite... I buy from many dealers on-line and eBay. I had a ton of the envelopes I had received with multiples of commemorative stamps on them. I decided to soak some of these stamps and guess what? A bunch of them all were affixed with Elmers Glue!
Made me wonder about dealers reusing stamps!
And sometimes Postage Due is wrong... we had a friend get married and she sent out elaborate invitations. She took them to the post office and had them weigh one. Within the one ounce limit. BUT one local town disagreed and everyone in that town received theirs postage due!
Not in my case. I received a parcel, and the dealer paid first class letter rate. It should have been sent back to the dealer for proper postage. I paid more than enough in fees to cover all the expenses for handling and shipping.
I have some mint hinged stamps that I want to use for postage. None of them are particularly valuable. Is it OK to use special delivery stamps for regular first class mail?
