If I remember right that was the time period when investors were using stamps as part of their investment plans. Stamps were at a high point during the early 80's, if memory serves! We were heavily into Canada at the time and I remember spending a large amount for a mint, no hinge, perfectly centered copy of the Bluenose and Parliament Buildings. We spent a fair bit on the collection during the 1980's and I think it "all went to Hell" in the 1990's. At least that's how I remember it!!
Harvey, could the internet be partially to blame ? In the 1970s i was building a Netherlands collection and paying 50 to 100 percent catalog for the better semi postals...now they are all over the place !
This is Linn's Stamp News market trend as if 2014 and notice the bubble burst in the early 80's after the inflationary period. When Scott redid the catalog values in 1988, it annoyed a lot of dealers but it also proved that some dealers were exploiting the catalog values to justify prices. If the market was setting prices, the values change should not have been a big deal.

I remember it like it was yesterday...our club had a set of the bright yellow cover 1988 scott catalogs. Dealers were asking $8,000 for a set of zepps..how much is that in todays money ? Greg Manning brayed that he would not use the new revalued scott catalogs...i wonder how that worked out for him ?
