Alyn, I think I can see the background printing but I'm not able to make out the letters.
Does it have a date code?
It was issued in 2013 without source code (IE MAIL) with a date.
Issued again in 2013 with date and source codes MBIL, MFIL.
Edit. Are the security slits cut into paper or are they printed on? They look different to these. https://adminware.ca/machin/mpip-1st-red.htm
Hi Sheepshanks
The Security Slits are cut into the stamp. From what I can see it only has MAIL with no date or Source Code. My understanding of the Deegam Catalogue (which is almost non-existent) is that the red stamps should all have a date code.
The First Class Large stamp is a forgery.
You can buy them in booklets on ebay.
If you look at the writing of the security overlay it is larger than normal and is the wrong font as well.
The biggest giveaway is the syncopated perf. It is more rectangular than oval.
Ian, that was my first thought, but the left side elliptical seemed to match the right hand one on the 1p stamp, although now I copy and enlarge the image it does not quite match.
Thanks, Brechinite. I thought it could have been a fake. Just wanted to double-check with the experts here before noting it as a fake.
The security overlay has only 9 lines of print whereas the genuine overlay has 12 or 13 lines.
I have a 1st Large but how do I know which one I have?
What does he date code look like and where is it on the stamp?
The date code is M17L. This is situated 3 rows up from the top of the space between the g e of Large.
Doug, if you look above the word LARGE in the wavy print line starting above the L you will see that the word MAIL has been changed to M17L.
The adminware site, https://adminware.ca/machin.htm
is a great resource for images showing various aspects of Machins, codes, dates, tags etc.
The other codes are found in the row next to the Queens Hair just above the forehead.
It will either read MAIL which is no code, MBIL or MFIL.
In your example it says MAIL so there is no other code.
Thank you for the information.
Hello all,
I received a cover in the mail and it was franked with the recent Machins shown below.
The 20p and 1p values are all good and have the anticipated code printed M19L for the 20p and M18L for the 1p. My concern is with the 1st Large Machin there is no code.
It is my understanding that the date code should be in the "post office red" version of this stamp. Do any Machin experts want to help me out here?
