My initial thought would be that the envelope got partially overlapped by the next one in the system.
Maybe someone else has a better idea.
I am on board with what Victor said - it appears something was 'overlaid' - i.e., in the way of the corner of the cover where the stamp resides.
You will notice a SLIGHT amount of line cancel made its way past the perf edge and onto the actual stamp.
This appears to show that the stamp was indeed on the cover at the time of cancelling.
Victor and Randy nailed it
the selvage IS cancelled (as is the stamp, ever so slightly)
AND most FDCs didn't go through the mail, which is what was intended
Thanks everyone. My mistake was forgetting that it was not hand canceled. Don't know why I just thought FDC at that time were hand canceled. Thanks again
Keith
I have this FDC where it looks like the stamp was added after the cancel. On closer inspection the word First (missing part of the T) is on the margin of the stamp. The ink goes into the perforations and stops. Based on the bottom line of the cancel the second line should have appeared below the stamp after the perfs. The stamp itself is too clean to have gone thru the mail. How did they pull this off? Thoughts
