I am trying to determine if this stamp can be found in a catalog or was it issued just to please collectors? Without the Surcharge "8" Chahis, it is Scott, Catalog #98; issued 1894. Your comments will be greatly appreciated.Image Not Found

Hi stampbaby,

There's a note in the SG catalogue that says the 5kr and 10kr were surcharged like this "without authority purely for collectors".

SG doesn't mention what the surcharged values were but their illustration is the same as on your stamp but with a value of 10 Tomans, so I guess that was the surcharge on the 10kr.

re: Persia/Iran Surcharge/Overprint Classification?

I did find this surcharge on my Y&T, 1934 (yes, close to that time when the whole world was in a single book, with prices roughly the same as now but values obviously different).

More the diagonal surcharge Postes persanes, 1903 is in a color is different for each stamp of the serie. The red one is the same for all stamps of the serie and means ContrĂ´le in Persian. The Y&T number is 225.

Colnet give Michel 207a, but no other number (Scott or others).

Enjoy and keep safe. Michel

I forgot: the surcharge is 8 Chahis on 5 Krans. Catalog value 10 French Francs in 1934, whatever it means for you and me today!

Enjoy again, Michel
