Hi
For the stamps in this series the letters have the following explanations:
A=four sided perforated
II=letterset
u=light yellowish,glossy gumming
For 60 Pf the image in the album corresponds to Mi#1028 (typo-1979 and Rollen letterset-1987)
They can be distinguished by observing the printing differences at a high enough magnification.
In Michel there is an example for typo and Letterset:
You can find these stamps on „delcampe.net“: Germany/ Federal Republic/ 1970-80/ and search BURGEN and SCHLÖSSER.
Thank you VERY MUCH for your detailed response! The best answer I could come up with locally was that perhaps part of the issues were actually not Typographic as indicated by the Scott's catalog but the Michel catalog content definitely indicates that there are separate issues as best I can read it. Thanks, also, for the dealer reference. I will check locally at the Seapex show coming up in September and if that is not fruitful contact the dealers mentioned on Delcampe.
Thanks again for pointing out the image from the Michel catalog which shows the difference in the printing. I will take a Pentax 30x magnifier with me to the show to check any offerings for verification.
UPDATE: I have figured out how to locate the stamps from the Delcampe listings and will decide tomorrow whether I will go ahead and get the stamps ordered before the show or wait for the Seapex show. (I haven't quite figured out the German listings for which are the MNH versions or if there is an additional variation I am not catching as there are multiple listings which have variations in the description and will check the listings again after getting some sleep. )
UPDATE 2:
Thanks for the additional clarification that Burgen and Schlosser is the name of the series of stamps not a specific dealer as well as the clarification on the Rollen indicating presence of control numbers on every fifth stamp as printed!
„Rollen" stamps have a control number for every 5 stamps.
The stamps with the number on the back are definitely Rollen stamps, but there are also stamps printed in the typo method.
The value of stamps with the number on the back is higher.
Burgen and Schlosser is the name of this series of stamps.
Good luck with your purchase.
Following the additional clarification that was provided I have placed an order for the missing stamps to complete my two volume German Federal Republic 1949-1991 collection! Now that those pesky holes in that collection have been filled I can go back to the International albums collection and the Smithsonian album collection.
Of course, now that I have a better understanding of the Michel listings I may have to revisit a German DDR Leuchtturm album that I picked up on a whim last year as well. Plus got an e-mail indicating that a Monday morning breakfast/lunch stamp group that meets at a restaurant in a nearby town is going to have a German stamps' focus tomorrow so may have a bit more of a go at the stamps of Germany (there are a lot of holes in the International albums for Germany related issues so this might be a good start).
It is so much more fun when related content starts flowing in from multiple places!
Congratulations on finding the missing stamps quickly.
I bought an album BundesRepublic Deutschland 1990-2000.
I have some gaps because the Souvenir sheet stamps from this period were not issued and independently.
It is advisable to buy 2 copies of each souvenir sheet.
Very nice album pages, I particularly like the rounded corners.
"I have been working my way through completing a couple of Borek brand Germany stamp albums for the German Federal Republic which cover 1949 through 1991 and am now down to one set of stamps from 1987 which appear to be letterset (or "aus rollen" in the German language album) printed with face values of 10, 30, 50, 60, 80, and 300."
AND
Be aware that BERLIN has LETTERSET stamps Burgen und Schlösser too.
Example :
Thanks Hockey Hut, I got a translation of Roles for Rollen on a web search. I thought Coils made more sense.
Have found a few with numbers, images below. As I only have used stamps the numbers are not always easy to see.
Did they reprint all values as coils / booklets or were some omitted?
If you look in the Michel catalog (see also the scans above), you'll find abbreviations of the issue formats behind the description of every stamp of this (and other) series:
(B) ... Bogen = sheet
(R) ... Rolle = coil
(MH) ... Markenheftchen = booklet
As far as I remember, all "Burgen und Schlösser" stamps were issued in coils, and some (most) also in sheets. Booklet stamps can be recognized by straight edges at the top or bottom.
Martin
Thanks Martin, will do, but my Michel is an older one from 1994, hopefully nothing has changed much since then.
All values were issued in sheet (10x10) and coil (typo printing).
4 booklets MH 21, 22, 23 and 24 were issued (typo printing)
Booklet MH22 was also issued in letterset printing.
Only 6 values (the ones previously posted by HockeyNut) were issued in coil in Letterst printing
Thank you Gerom, now to check through my duplicates.
I have been working my way through completing a couple of Borek brand Germany stamp albums for the German Federal Republic which cover 1949 through 1991 and am now down to one set of stamps from 1987 which appear to be letterset (or "aus rollen" in the German language album) printed with face values of 10, 30, 50, 60, 80, and 300.
They appear to NOT be listed in the Scott catalog other than as a 1977 issue which was printed by typography (catalog #'s 1231-1242) or a 1979-82 issue which was, also, printed by typography (catalog #'s 1308-1315). I don't have access to a Michel catalog on which the Borek albums seem to be based based on a search for information on the Borek albums themselves. I did find "some" information on Colnect but am at a loss on how to interpret the catalog numbers that were listed for Michel under 1987 issues for Germany. Their site does show Stanley Gibbons catalog number for the stamps with denominations 10, 30, 50, 80, and 300 of 1805b, 1806b, 1808c, 1810b, and 1812e, respectively, but I have so far not been successful in finding a web site offering to sell German stamps using Stanley Gibbons catalog numbers nor in identifying the stamp with a value of 60 and its related Stanley Gibbons number.
Does anyone know the relevant Michel catalog or Stanley Gibbons catalog #'s for the missing 60 valued stamp or even better a relevant source for all six of the stamps in MNH condition that would not cost a fortune for delivery to a USA address?
Any available guidance on interpreting Michel catalog #'s would, also, be appreciated! The Colnect listed catalog #'s for values of 10, 30, 50, 80, and 300 for Michel were 913Allu, 914Allu, 1038Allu, 1140All, and 1143All, respectively.
