I just won a lot on eBay and when I saw there were 15 bids on a cover that I only paid $1.52 for, it got my curiosity. I pulled the text out of the auction and sorted it by date / time in Excel. I've highlighted Mr. Nibbles in yellow.

The seller started the item at a penny. So Mr Nibbles bids a penny.

A numpty comes along and bids a big 12 cents!

No doubt Mr Nibbles gets an email that he's been outbid. So he goes in and bids 11 cents! Seeing that the current bid is now 12 cents, he goes for broke and ups his bid a whole nickel! Seeing he's high bidder at 17 cents, he's satisfied!

Then a legitimate bidder comes along and bids $1.03. Again, Mr Nibbles gets an outbid email. Now he's ticked! He's probably seeing a bid of 25 cents so he bids 27 cents! Outbid by the eBay proxy! So he does SEVEN 10 cent nibbles! Finally he bids a 20 cent nibble and is now high bidder at $1.27. He's probably all pleased with himself. He's mentally putting that cover in his album!

But... he's done this with 23 hours to go on the auction!

What he doesn't know is that I've had this auction on my Watchlist! eBay jingles my phone 15 minutes before the auction ends. I ask Siri to set a timer for 14 minutes. I tune back to the auction and see Mr Nibbles bid at $1.27. I set my bid torpedo at $3 maximum bid... I strike with SIX SECONDS TO GO! BOOM! I win at the next bid interval of $1.52!

I hope he's good and ticked! Happy

And this folks is why you don't bid early on eBay! You are just exposing a bid for others to nibble on!

That is amusing Happy

But, judging by a feedback score of only 10, I guess that Mr. Nibbles is still very new at the eBay game and hasn't quite figured it out yet.

More than likely!
But still I see people with hundreds or thousands of feedback doing the same thing!

And more observations..

I've been researching some of my favorite sellers lately. There is one who starts everything out at a penny. None of his stuff makes it through without a bid, because there are people... maybe one person... who goes in and places a penny bid on them all! Someone with a lot of time on their hands! And these auctions are all FREE SHIPPING!

The auctions look like this! If I was the seller I'd wanna strangle the guy!

Looks like the nibbler ran out of cents. Must have been a small piggy bank.

Sniping is the only way to bid on ebay. Who has the time to mess around like that? If I win great. If not that's ok too!

To snipe, or not to snipe, that is the question. I prefer not to, not because I'm some kind of "auction purist", I just prefer not to. I just put in what I consider to be my maximum and usually just let things unfold. If I get the item, fine, if not, fine. It's just what I prefer to do. I know I occasionally pay too much, but, I guess, I'll just have to live with that. If that's the biggest problem I ever have, I guess I am very lucky!

Aye! Put in your bid that you are willing to pay and if it goes for more Good Luck to the seller is what I say.

My life does not depend on winning bids especially on ebay. However there is no greater feeling when you get a surefire double-barrelled BARGAIN!!

To snipe or not to snipe, that is the question. Is it better to...

What's not to do is both bid normally and auto-snipe at the same time. That's something I'm doing on two lots right now. Just say I win it on my opening normal bid. What will happen is my snipe will push it one step past my maximum normal bid. Don't do this on expensive stamps;-)

Sniping on works because the auction ends at a certain time and thanks to the digital age (reliable internet), bids can be submitted with precision. If the auction was extended extra many minutes after the last bid, the auction dynamics would be different. The nibbler would be a bigger factor.

It would be interesting to see results if ebay offered both types.
