Can someone tell me if this is listed in a catalogue ? Edifil or Micheal or SG ?

It has a very unusual perf count. 13.75 x 13. Scott #705a I believe. #705 is 12.75 x 13.25 and this is suppose to be 9.75 x 10.25.

#705a is just a guess.

The only difference in 705 and this is the value field. 705 says 10 PTS.

Thank you.

re: Unusual perf variety.

This doesn't look like a perf 13 to me. The spacing of the holes looks too wide for a 13. Have you accurately measured with a perf gauge?

This looks like #709, perf 9.5 x 10.5

Remember that Scott rounds perf measurements to the nearest 0.5.

Well I arrived at that number by comparing another stamp from Spain that was of a later date. I couldn't locate my gauge at the time. That stamp was listed with those numbers.

Hi perf11,

Michel lists four stamps like this (plus a rare imperf):

#856A - 10 PTS - perf 9¾ x 10¼ - 9.00

#856B - 10 PTS - perf 10 (line perf) - 45.00

#857A - 10 PTAS - perf 9¾ x 10¼ - 1.00

#857B - 10 PTAS - perf 13 x 13½ - 1.20

The prices are in marks for used stamps from my old 1998/99 catalogue.

Well I double checked for the heck of it. And it was a little off. I can see that the side is most likely 13.5 but the top is definitely 13 or 13+. So I'm definitely headed to get new gauge. Thanks gentleman.

Roy. Count those perfs. 15 I counted. No way 9.75. Lol.18 down. Party

Think I'm gonna chuck my Scotts as well. At least for foreign stamps.

For any rookies reading this, allow me to point out that perforation measurements have nothing to do with the number of perforations on a stamp. The measurement is the number of perforations in 2 centimeters, thus a decent perforation gauge is a necessary tool for identifying stamps.

Also a couple of pieces of trivia.
1) Scott catalog rounds to the nearest 1/2. It does not typically report quarters. This frequently leads to confusion.

2) Scott and Gibbons differ in the order in which they present measurements. Scott reports horizontal x vertical whereas SG reports vert x horiz. If using a catalog, be sure to check which direction it uses.

Scott 709a is listed as the 1953 issue "perf 13". This is reasonably consistent with the Michel listing indicated by nigelc of #857B - 10 PTAS - perf 13 x 13½

These are perfs. 13 and 9 1/2 side by side, quite a difference, there's also a perf. 10
with imprint.

No wonder I always have trouble remembering the orientation of perforation measurements.

Unless I'm very much mistaken (I'll eat humble pie of course), the rest of the world's catalogues measures correctly, Scott does not. Big Grin
