I used to buy several kinds of glass and china that I collect on E-Bay - not anymore!!
The shipping prices for things like that have gone up so much that there is no way I can justify buying there. Another site I use (Ruby Lane) tends to be much more reasonable. I really think that E-Bay is losing a lot of potential customers, especially non American ones, because of shipping. Stamps are usually more reasonable but even there I have to be careful. I bid on a stamp last week that I really wanted, but in my enthusiasm I forgot to check shipping. It was over $30 for a single stamp, thankfully I got overbid!! I know it`s because of the new system a lot of the buyers are using, but it has really put a damper on some of my collecting. Maybe that`s a good thing!

re: Shipping prices on E-Bay!!

Aye you have to be careful and always have to check out the shipping charges before you bid no matter what platform your on.

Here in the UK ebay now want sellers bank account details and will pay your sales direct into your bank account within 2-3 days. Of course less their charges.

Now that means that if a buyer "wins" something on a Friday night, pays immediately, the seller has to check their bank account on Wednesday/Thursday to make sure they have been paid and then ship the item instead of it being shipped on the Saturday or the Monday.

Here in the UK there have been so many banks closing that we can only check our accounts through an ATM. I have a few automatic withdrawls around the 1st to the 3rd of each month that any additional transactions would not show up on the info from an ATM.

Of course ebay are assuming that everyone does on line banking but those like me who do not do online banking and will refuse to give our bank account details to them will now go elsewhere to purchase and never sell on ebay again.

Ian, it seems like E-Bay is attempting to take over the world - a bit of an exaggeration (that's one Hell of a hard word to spell - it took three tries to get rid of the red underlining), but not much. I used to sell on E-Bay about 10 years ago and things were much simpler then. Everything now, except shipping costs, seem to be in favour of the buyer! If they keep this up I think many sellers will bail out, at least I would!

In case you have not found out, if you right click on the underlined word, spell check will suggest alternatives.
I always have problems switching between UK English and American English, my system being set to UK despite being in Canada.

I only sell stamps or covers..so shipping is $1.00-$1.50...but i know people who sell merchandise on ebay and they have no qualms about what they charge for shipping and they say the buyers are willing to pay !

re: Shipping prices on E-Bay!!

I guess I am odd man out. Unless the item is less than $2 I give free shipping on everything. I'm surprised to hear sellers are back to their old tricks. Some sellers do charge more for shipping stamps as they are always sending them as parcels. Ebay is offering a new service where you can send a first class letter for 51 cents and get free tracking. Too much extra work for me to get involved with and 51 cents is more than I currently pay anyway. The post office still handles the mail and I am not sure that if something is lost the seller who is always at fault (never forget that according to ebay the post office employees are my employees) the seller is forgiven. Probably not.

Here in Australia due to new postage rules we cannot send stamps as mail it has to go as a Parcel with a customs form How stupid is the UPU to instgate this idiotic rule thing is this only for shipping between Australia and the US.
Stamps on a cover are fine but put some inside and its automatically a parcel rediculous.

Brian, how would they know there are stamps inside? Sounds a bit like our media mail rules. If there are ads it is not media mail. Only certain things are supposed to be sent media mail, but unless they open it (which they are allowed to as it is media mail) no one would know. First class mail at least as far as I know, cannot be opened here in the US. Perhaps Australia is different

I don't understand this, I send 100 postally used stamps to fellow stamp collectors in Australia like three to four times a month and receive them as well and never had any problems.
One oz. or 20 grs. seems to be the limit for a first class letter so what difference does it makes what's inside?

This seems to be the best way to send items. Why? The envelope is not big enough to take a Customs Label!

I have said this previously "A little and often" is the way forward.

Todays postal charges are prohibitive to send outwith one's own country.

Overseas I can send 70 GB Commemmoratives, well packaged and the postage is $2.63. ie 3.757 cents per stamp. No customs label required.
To send 120 GB Commemms the postage costs are $3.99 ie 3.325 cents per stamp. But a Customs Label is required.
To send 140 GB Commemms the postage costs are $5.96 ie 4.279 cents per stamp. But a Customs label is required.

The Customs Label should state exactly what is within and the value, that way the correct postal charge can be applied and any duty due is collected.

The Customs Label also allows potential and actual theivery.

Of course if the stamps were just thrown into an envelope without any protection these figures change. However one may be disappointed on their condition on arrival.

re: Shipping prices on E-Bay!!

I don't think it's the sellers, it's the way eBay has their listing form set up. Note how many times a seller has said, "I don't know where they got that postage amount!"

Well, I have started selling on eBay after at least a dozen year hiatus. The Sell An Item form is poor at best. It assumes you are a numpty. My favorite is little floating Help button that is eternally in the way. And it then expands to "Ask An Expert Seller For Help". Considering that their "guidance" through the process is poor and not related to the stamp or cover area, I'm sure any help their "expert" will offer will be on selling consumer junk.

For instance, whenever I list something at a decent start point for a collectible... $9.99, $29.99 etc... up pops an eBay suggestion that I should start it at 99 cents "to attract more buyers"! Um, that just benefits eBay with a guaranteed sale. Screw the seller who has now sold a collectible for below their cost! And everything I've listed my way has sold... and for more than my opening bid!

Anyway, back to the postage thing. I'm mailing out a cover or two per order. I put it in a standard number 10 envelope, surround it with a 60 lb bond stiffner and ship it with 58 cents postage on it. Just like all the other sellers I deal with!

If you go through the "Ship Your Item" section I notice that, without me providing any information there, has assigned a weight of 3 ounces and package dimensions of 7"x4"x4". I've have clicked the "Buyer Pays - Flat shipping" and marked that $1.00 per order.

STILL, when I hit the button to see orders I need to ship, it pulls up a list of their paid shipping labels, "recommending" I send them via Priorty Mail at $3-5 apiece. Forget the logic that My item sold for 99 cents and I've charged the buyer $1 for postage. The eBay system enthusiastically tells me to lose $1-3 per order! Why? So they can make money on the shipping too!

And looking at the "Ship Your Item" section, for it to do it's calculations, sellers need to know the exact weight and dimensions of the package upon listing it. Unless you are someone shipping the same item over and over, who packs their items to ship at that point? So either eBay is assigning arbitrary values or sellers are just guessing. And of course the shipping charges are wrong!

I think Ian has a point. We had several packets sent from the US that got lost (probably meaning stolen) recently, presumably because of the recent rules that everything has to have a customs label. Apart from that, a packet that did arrive had 15 dollars of merchandise. On top of that 15 dollars of shipping and 9.30 euros of taxes.

So that was a very effective way to stop buying things from US sellers.

I have just posted a couple of large letters to the USA today. They both had to have customs forms on. Hopefully they will arrive unhindered and not "disappear" into the great void that they call "The Postal System".

Don't be blaming Americans for your own tax situation. Everyone is eager to dump on the USA that our drugs / healthcare are more costly than Canada / Europe... but we don't get taxed on incoming packages! I've never paid duty!

Ian, they force you to use a customs form? I suppose we are supposed to but I never will. It's a red flag that tells customs agents "steal me". And of course all these folks just like the post office workers, are my employees. After all, when something goes missing, where do the buyers go to for a refund? This is why I decided not to give them a three cent raise.

And just try getting a refund from the post as a seller. Even with tracking, as far as they are concerned it is delivered. To where, who knows. I could not begin to imagine how an American deals with something gone missing that had a customs firm. So, I'll pass on them. I stopped sending parcels internationally a couple of years ago due to things with customs forms and USPS tracking not arriving.

YUP! They will not accept a letter/package with an overseas address at a post office unless it has a properly completed Customs Form (CN22).

They will not allow you to send a "Tracked" or "Signed For" letter/package to a P O Box Number either.

The Customs Form is that big it does not fit on a C5 envelope so I now prefer to post everything using C5's but to make sure items are protected I have to use A5's sometimes.

Its great to get substantial sales but you know that a percentage of them will "disappear" and you will never get the money out of the Mail Company. How can you prove what you paid for the stamps when they come out of an album that was purchased in a lot of several.

Buyers do not realise that when something goes missing and the seller refunds them the seller only gets the postage cost back if they are lucky. The seller loses the sale and the stamps.

A seller can take the odd hit if its $10 or $20 but a couple at $50 or $70 is way way too much. That's why I find it ironic that buyers want to build up their purchases "to save on postage costs".

BUT Hey-Ho!

Should they require that here my international selling days come to an end. It's not worth the headache. With the continuous rising of postage costs, I believe the day draws closer that I give up the whole selling game for anything other than first class letters. Either that or my free postage comes to an end. I see more and more listings that now have eliminated that already. I can't wait for the excuses as to why Christmas packages should be mailed on November 1st to make sure hey are there in time for Christmas. Let the whining begin!

I buy from Ian regularly and have never had an envelope go missing (knock on wood). Personally, if one did go missing, I would not expect Ian to take the loss since I know he mailed it. That's just me, I doubt most people would do that but here on Stamporama, where we are a club, I would think that perhaps there should be some grace. While it's business, it's friendly business, if that makes sense. When the pandemic first hit, I had several overseas orders including from Australia. They all made it eventually (about 2 months) and I never once thought to ask for a refund since it certainly wasn't the seller's fault.

The one saving grace with the new customs forms is that they have a barcode on them and technically they should be able to be "tracked" by Customs if they do "Disappear" but whether they would is a different matter.

"What spend our time on a $25 or $50 package? Nae chance laddie!" Would be the response.

If you use a C5 envelope to send any thing from Australia your up for $14.00 postage ,but you can use a prepaid international envelope twice the size and send it for $10.00.

I've been listing covers on eBay as of late. Just for fun.

I've listed them all as "USA Only" and that's worked fine. And they're all US covers and postcards.

Then I had two auction winners... one in Japan and one in Italy! I have them listed with $1 postage for USA. The guy in Japan sent me a message for a total with postage to Japan. It was just a card, and less than half an ounce. I told him $1.50 and he remitted the amount. And it went out as a regular letter for one International stamp.

And the lady in Italy provided a US address!

All is well.

Greg- I'm Turtles-Trading-Post

Long story....

From the time I was a wee lad I had decided I liked money. So we always played store! My mother said, "By the time Thomas was 6, he had all the pennies in the neighborhood!" I liked turtles, and somewhere I saw a store named "Something Trading Post" so I thought that would make a good name, thus Turtle's Trading Post was born.

Image Not Found

Our original location. Established 1966.

When I started selling on eBay when it was fairly new, and they first instituted user names, I thought it would be fun to drag out the old name. My daughter, who was a child at the time, drew the logo. She's now in her 30s.

I hadn't sold on eBay for at least a dozen years, so I dusted off my old company name!
