Here is an full-page advertisement from the 1882-83 R. L. Polk & Co. Indiana State Gazetteer and Business Directory. These steamers served Indiana and Kentucky along a short section of the Ohio River.
I was surprised to learn how short a lifespan the average Mississippi steamboats had..
If you can get your hands on it, there is a great old western series starring Darrin Magavin and, for a while, Burt Reynolds, called Riverboat. I have it on DVD and it is really fun to watch, I remember it from when I was a kid!
Harvey , thats really going back in time...but with Burt Reynolds it had to be in the 70s or so.
Riverboat was 1959-61 with Burt being replaced midway through the series.
Wow, Burt had a long career...i missed that show...all we could get in Italy 1961 was Perry Mason.
But you probably got to see Topo Gigio before Ed Sullivan and the rest of the USA did!
... and Canada!
Topo Rules!
No, there was not too much of a menu on T.V. back then...but they loved Perry Mason.
David Giles sent me the January/February edition of the Canadian Philatelist which has an article by our friend Dick Logan "Steamboats and steamboat mail". Great history, i love the California Mail Route via Panama 1848/51 ..with all the stops New York,,Charleston, Savannah,,Cuba, New Orleans,,Kingston Jamaica,Chagres Panama,Acapulco,San Blas,Mazatlan,San Diego, Santa Barbara, Monterey, San Francisco, i hope no one was in a hurry.
