General Philatelic/Newcomer Cnr : Unusual Stamp Size

I was consolidating my collection of Vatican City stamps into a single album, and I discovered that 3 of the 8 stamps were 2mm taller! I had duplicates of 2 of these stamps, and I checked these two, but they were not as tall!! The Scott numbers are 105, 106 & 107. Anyone have any idea? Is there typically this much variation in stamps? I thought that stamps had minimal variation in size. Where do I go from here?

re: Unusual Stamp Size

I don't know about Vatican City stamps, but there are a number of stamps I do know about that come in different sizes. Examples include the Canadian "Admiral" issues of the early 20th Century; there are "dry" and "wet" printings that are measurably distinct and some U.S. special delivery issues.

If your Vatican City stamps are definitives, they may have been printed by different printers over the lifetime of the issue.

This is the case with the Italian "Castles" issue; a number of printers created a huge number of stamps with size, color, perforation, and watermark differences, not to mention printing "EFOs" -- errors, freaks, and oddities. In some cases, the differences are so striking that they could be considered different stamps entirely.

It is, by the way, an easy thing to assume that one stamp is larger or smaller than another if the margins are of differing widths. The printed part of a stamp will look larger if the margins are narrow, or smaller if they are wide. Be sure to measure, preferably using a mm scale, from edge to edge of the design, not the entire stamp.

Hi David,

I think you are talking about the war victim issues, but I don't have Scott, as Vatican City didn't issue that many stamps till 1945 it is possible my Michel runs even. Can you give an issue date of these stamps, maybe I can help you out, as I see that there are several prints concerning the stamps I mentioned.

Regards,

Rob.

re: Unusual Stamp Size

Thanks Rob and Bob,

The stamps were issued Jan. 9, 1946 are were a set of surcharged stamps on top of the issues from Mar. 1945. I noticed the difference because I was placing them in stamp mounts and the 3 in question didn't fit into the same size that the others did!

I measured the stamps carefully, and it was 2mm different! The top and bottom margins appear to be larger. The width is the same however.

re: Unusual Stamp Size

Hi David,

This puzzles me a bit, the only listing in Michel for 1946 is from February 20 to celebrate something that is going on or has been 400 years ago.

Are we talking about these stamps with one church, some saints and bishops etc. in the series?
Because that series comes in 2 different perforations and looking at the pictures in my Michel they don't all have the same size.

Regards,

Rob.

I am out of this discussion.... Scott lists the surcharged stamps, but only discusses watermark, surcharge, and imperf varieties. You should ask on the rec.collecting.stamps.discuss newsgroup.

Yes, Bob, it is the surcharged group. Perhaps Rob, it is listed in Micheel under 1945 - surcharged.

It is not the church, saints, and bishops... it is only the pope profiles, facing left and right.

Thanks for the discussion group url.

Hi David,

Well in that case nothing is listed in Michel either. Follow Bob's advice ;-)
