Hi Harvey,
The two stamps sound like:
SG 205 deep turquoise (= Mi 188a / Fi 170 I)
SG 205a blue green (= Mi 188b / Fi 170 II)
SG 205 is a surcharge on SG 165 (= Mi 158 / Fi 125 I) which is 28 x 22 mm.
SG 205a is a surcharge on SG 168 (= Mi 162 / Fi 125 II) which is 27¼ x 21½ mm.
My old Scott doesn't seem to list either of the two smaller stamps.
I wonder if they're listed in the Scott Classic?
My SG and Fischer catalogues give the same price for the surcharged used stamps but have higher prices for the larger of the mint stamps,
In SG Poland (2015):
SG 205 is £8.25 mint 40p used.
SG 205a is £2.10 mint 40p used.
Hi Harvey,
I just noticed you quoted a different sized stamp.
There is a much bigger difference in size for the two 20m stamps than for the 10m stamps.
Maybe this is why the smaller 10m has flown under the Scott radar?
Here are examples of the three sizes of the basic stamps:
Left to right: Small 20 Mk, Small 10 Mk, Large 10 Mk:
I have finally got Windows 10 to talk to my trusty old scanner!
Although once again Epson has redesigned the scanning software and moved all the options to completely new places.
Thanks for the pictures - there seems to be a colour difference! I checked my two non-overprinted stamps and the one with the larger design also seems to be a darker blue. Very interesting, I never noticed it before! That might be a way to tell - if I come up with the smaller design for the overprint it will be interesting to see if it is a lighter blue! Thanks again, not much you people don't know!!
I finally found a version of the overprinted 10k that is blue green as opposed to dark blue. The price was minimal so I bought it. It'll be interesting if it turns out to be the stamp with the smaller design size to finish that page in my Minkus album. I'll let you know when it arrives. It's still a bit odd that this variety doesn't show up in Scott's since the design size difference is quite noticeable in the two non-overprinted stamps.
The stamp I am looking for has no Scott's number. It is a slightly different version of #197, the 50 000 MK overprint on the 10m "Sower and Rainbow of Hope" stamp. The design size is a bit smaller, 25 1/2 by 21 rather than 28 by 22. Can anyone out there help me out finding this stamp? The same base stamp for this overprint also comes in two sizes, also with the same Scott's number for each - I am lucky enough to have both. I don't believe the stamp I'm missing has huge value, it's just hard to find unless you have a bunch to look through. My Minkus album, unfortunately, has both varieties for both stamps. I would guess the regular Poland collector doesn't know about the variety so maybe you should check your spares of #'s 154 and 197.
Edit: If anyone has a copy of some kind of Poland Specialized catalog (I should, but don't) could you possibly find out for me the relative rarity of the two versions of #197. If they are about equal I will just buy other copies until I end up with both varieties. If the smaller one is much rarer this probably would not work!
